Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Nominee - Judges' Award for Best Paranormal Audiobook, 2011

"A new, strongly unique voice in the dark fantasy genre." (Kim Harrison)

"Hunter's very professionally executed, tasty blend of dark fantasy, mystery, and romance should please fans of all three genres." ( Booklist)
"Khristine Hvam portrays Jane with an adventurous-sounding voice edged with a twang.... Hvam’s voices for the Louisiana locals whom Jane learns to love and respect.... augment an intriguing story with hints of Native American mysticism." ( AudioFile)

Thoroughly enjoyed this book

I met Jane Yellowrock in a short story and thought I'd try her out. One of the best decisions' I ever made. Characters were vibrant with great stories filling them in. Looking forward to the rest.

So Interesting....

This is not your typical vamp series. Lots of new twists and lots of new combinations of lore. Great narration, too. I dare say "charming."

Good story

I liked the story but as soon as the beast talk took over, I found it annoying. I want to keep reading the series but I'm not sure if I can deal with that.

I cant wait to listen to the rest of the series

I love this story so much, was recommended to me and feel in love in the very first chapter

I enjoy the narrators voice though at times its sounds like a complete different voice has interjected in but I got used to it.

I cant wait to start the next book and learn more. oh and there are also a bunch of short stories available too. which I look forward to listening to as well

Good 1st book

Any additional comments?

Enjoyed the book. Interesting hearing animal thoughts. I was a little worried that Jane was somewhat dense. I would have followed Annie a lot sooner. I kept thinking, why isn't she following Annie. Anyway, good first book in a new series. I'm looking forward to reading next in series. Narrator did a good job!

Badass lady

Jane Yellowrock takes a job for the head vampires of New Orleans. While hunting for the rouge vampire Jane uncovers some of her lost memories and more information about her past. A cast of sexy men join Jane to work, flirt, and possibly lead her astray. While we don’t get the steamy sex scenes we want this is a fun book with an awesome female lead.

Never been a fan of this genre, but I am now!

You could call this “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” meets “Tru Blood.” This story is about a Cherokee Skinwalker who hunts vampires for a living. On the surface, it has a lot of tropes, but they are done with skill and humor. I don’t even gravitate towards stories like this, but I enjoyed this one so much, I will definitely get the sequel. Faith Hunter uses science to help explain the magic, and she makes a really supernatural universe that is funny and action packed. And at the risk of sounding anal, I also love the chapter titles.

Khristine Hvam’s narration is top rate. She not only voices characters in a distinct manner (you expect that), but she also juggles nearly a dozen accents and dialects. She even voices a sweet little girl to perfection.

Vampy Vamp Vamps

It’s the first book in a long series and that’s clear because it really dumped a ton of characters and world rules onto me. I sometimes got a little lost in it, but I’m intrigued and on my way to get the second book now. I’m a huge Anne Rice fan and the vampires in this don’t seem to disappoint. It seems like a rich world and I’m excited to hear more.

I will say that some of the narration took getting used to because the narrator has to switch between many accents...but after the first half of the book I was already immersed and not worried about it.
