Publisher's summary

Book two in the stunning conclusion to Frank Herbert's worldwide best-selling Dune Chronicles

At the end of Frank Herbert's final novel, Chapterhouse: Dune, a ship carrying a crew of refugees escapes into the uncharted galaxy, fleeing from a terrifying, mysterious Enemy. The fugitives used genetic technology to revive key figures from Dune's past - including Paul Muad'Dib and Lady Jessica - to use their special talents to meet the challenges thrown at them.

Based directly on Frank Herbert's final outline, which lay hidden in two safe-deposit boxes for a decade, Sandworms of Dune will answer the urgent questions Dune fans have been debating for two decades: the origin of the Honored Matres, the tantalizing future of the planet Arrakis, the final revelation of the Kwisatz Haderach, and the resolution to the war between Man and Machine. This breathtaking new novel in Frank Herbert's Dune series has enough surprises and plot twists to please even the most demanding listener.

You'll read it anyways

Yes. It's the end of the series. If you've made it this far, you absolutely have to finish it. The ending was disappointing. It lacked Frank Herbert's signature, explosive, mind-blowing factors.
Conflicts were resolved in truly unbelievable ways. Up to this point, I've enjoyed how the series never spent too much time on details and yet still gave you enough information to work it out in your mind. Not so with this final book.
Just lower your expectations, and you'll enjoy the ending.

You only have to hear to finish the Dune series

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recomend this is someone is a fan of the Dune series and wishes to learn how it ends. I would not recommend this or Hunters of Dune for any other reason.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I thought some negative reviews of this and Hunters of Dune were exaggerrated by people who expected to hear a story on par with Frank Herbert's excellent work. The authors were quite clear that they utilized Frank's notes and work but always intended to write with their own voices. Their work deserves applause, but also criticism whether compared to Frank's work or in its own right. The story does not flow well, with most sections being too short and ending abruptly such that plot lines and character development suffer. The quotes between sections often seem extraneous or repetitious. I could listen to this at work and space out often without feeling I missed much.

Any additional comments?

The production is flawed in that there is often little to no pause between sections, while there is often more pause within dialogue or narration within sections. The authors made many sections too short as I mentioned previously, and the production made immersion and maintaining interest even worse.

Fitting end of a epic tale

Well done! A tale completed by fans. Mr. Herbert would be proud. The end the way it should be told... nothing left on the table.

True to the story

Very similarly to last book of Narnia, sort of ties up loose ends and gives all the Champions trophies of happy endings.

You can tell Brian is more of story teller than Frank, but he doesn’t seem to have the intimacy of fighting and struggling against choking petty bureaucrats. Frank’s books were full of very insightful quips and jabs around leadership vs midwits. These last two Dune books quips are more about love and struggle.

Still great books.

a satisfying conclusion

I think whatever Frank Herbert would have written would have been better, but I also think his son and Kevin Anderson made a satisfying ending with the available notes they had. I so like The last two books in the chronological story always get unfair treatment, and in fact a few of the things I was wonder about not making sense were actually explained in the book. I started the original dune almost a year ago, and what an enjoyable, weird, and thought-provoking journey it was

Series review

To be honest, if anybody asked me whether they should read / listen to all books in this series, my answer would be: it’s totally fine if you stay with Dune. I read Dune as a kid, but never bothered to read the other books, some of which anyways came after my sci-fi phase ended.

All subsequent books are about the same in quality and style and so on - maybe with the exception of this one…. It has way too much action and things happening in the last few hours. The not-Frank Herbert authors tried to tie up all loose ends… but, really, who wants to tie loose ends in what is probably really a lengthened treatise of an LSD trip?

Consume or don’t.
