Publisher's summary

In the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse, a lone survivor faces a grave new threat as even the undead begin to disappear, in this sequel to Mountain Man.

Ever since the end of civilization, Gus Berry has spent his days waking up, getting drunk, and preparing for the inevitable zombie attack on his mountain fortress. Occasionally, he must take his life in his hands and venture into the undead world below in search of supplies.

These days, Gus is accustomed to the mortal threats he encounters. He has steeled himself against the corpse-infested streets, human scavengers, and unending loneliness. But now something new and strange is happening: the zombies are disappearing.

It seems a mysterious new threat is assembling—something even more relentless and terrifying than the roaming tides of dead flesh. And it’s preparing to hunt . . .

Gus is Back in a Bad Way

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

For a fan of the zombie genre, these books should be considered canon. It represents the core issues facing a post-apocalypse survivor: food rationing, degenerate humans, and - of course - dead people trying to eat you. Throw in the big twist and you've got zombie gold.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Gus, Gus, Gus

At first you don't like him, and you wonder about his increasingly unstable mental state. But this guy is a survivor. A survivor's survivor. Even with his character flaws (which are many), you can't help be root for the guy... even when he adds municipal arsony to his bag of tricks.

What about R. C. Bray’s performance did you like?

RC Bray is my favorite narrator and he nails Gus once again. I always judge a listen by whether I get lost in the story, and this happens largely due to Bray's deep gravely voice. Bray IS Gus, and brings the character to vivid life. He does a great job with all the other characters as well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could have, I would have. I burned through it pretty quickly even so... probably done in less than a week. And I've listened to it again... and probably will again.

Geeez…

Excellent narration - wow. Y’all this is seriously gruesome zombie stuff… it’s everything it’s supposed to be. book 1 was good but not as gritty and gross as book 2. Book 2 is Descriptive disgusting violent action. Hope I don’t dream about it lol…. But I might!!!

A more complete story arc than the first

I'm glad I continued the series. The story stepped up in the 2nd book and told a more complete arc with a more logical end point, leaving it open to continue without feeling like the story was just stopped short, as I felt after the 1st book. I still believe that if the 1st and 2nd book were combined, it would make for one much stronger novel overall though. The excellent narrator continues his fantastic performance with this strong writing. The use of the imaginary friend in Captain Morgan is a clever substitution for the lack of supporting characters and strong dialogue the first book had. I would strongly suggest listening to book 1 and 2 together before forming a final opinion. Looking forward to book 3 now.

Tiring already

Hours of killing zombies only to introduce a new menace after ignoring an old main character. With a cliff hanger ending necessitating you purchase Book 3 - a very old and tired marketing method from the serials of the early 20th century. I’m stopping now - all this book really has is great narration by RC Bray.

Drunken Zombie Fest

Our hero manages to stay drunk then tire book. I would be dead from
The drinking. My husband and I liked the narrator, the story and it helped a lot while we painted the house.
