Publisher's summary

Young Fitz, the illegitimate son of the noble Prince Chivalry, is ignored by all royalty except the devious King Shrewd, who has had him tutored him in the dark arts of the assassin. He has barely survived his first, soul-shattering mission, and when he returns to the court, he is thrown headfirst into the tumult of royal life.

With the king near death, and Fitz's only ally off on a seemingly hopeless quest, the throne itself is threatened.

Meanwhile, the treacherous Red Ship Raiders have renewed their attacks on the Six Duchies, slaughtering the inhabitants of entire seaside towns. In this time of great peril, it soon becomes clear that the fate of the kingdom may rest in Fitz's hands - and his role in its salvation may require the ultimate sacrifice.

Critic reviews

“Hobb manages to create a kingdom that looks like a fairy tale but feels like the real world---which makes it almost impossible not to become immersed in Hobb's fantasy epic.” ( Publishers Weekly)

The second book was very good. Now I need to start the last book to see what happens in the end!

Engaging

Hobbs does a great job of writing intrigue and characters. The biggest problem I have with the story, even more than the first, is the amount of mortal danger Fitz is always in. This book suggests that his life were always in danger since the first book left off, but since the story is told in a first person perspective you know he survives. it really takes the feast out of all situations, even when you do start to feel strongly for him, which you probably already do if you are finished with book 1.

Got a little tedious towards the end.

I really liked the first book in the series. This one was good for a while then it just started getting old. It wasn't really bad. It just stopped being very entertaining. I'm not sure I will bother with the next book. The narration is good.

Long live the King

Loved every aspect of this book. Characters, narrator, depth, atmosphere, and cliff hanger! Worth the 29 hour listen on x1.5. Can't wait for the next (38 hour listen) will be over too fast.

Better than the first book.

This one got engaging around chapter 19. The queen in waiting story line added a lot to the overall plot.
