Publisher's summary

Car mechanic Mercy Thompson has always known there was something different about her, and not just the way she can make a VW engine sit up and beg. Mercy is a shapeshifter, a talent she inherited from her long-gone father. She's never known any others of her kind. Until now.

An evil is stirring in the depths of the Columbia River - one that her father's people may know something about. And to have any hope of surviving, Mercy and her mate, the Alpha werewolf Adam, will need their help....

Have Mercy! Listen to another Mercy Thompson chiller.

Critic reviews

"An outstanding urban fantasy novel with some well-loved and well-traveled characters...The way [Briggs] writes about all of the different fictional supernatural creatures is fascinating and keeps you on your toes.” (Examiner.com)

Tired of listening to stories about humans? Consider the werewolf! Taking various forms over the course of centuries and mythologies, often as flesh-devourers, werewolves now commonly appear in fantasy and romance novels as shape-shifters. The shape-shifting element in werewolves' stories has almost humanized them, depicting the internal struggles we all face within ourselves, on some level or another.

Wow

Would you listen to River Marked again? Why?

I would listen to this book many more times. Not only was it well written and entertaining but the narrator did a great job.

What other book might you compare River Marked to and why?

Can't really compare this book to just one. There were things from different books but the way that Patricia Briggs wrote this is also different than anything else.

What does Lorelei King bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Lorelei King brings character or spunk to the characters. I find that enjoy her individual characters but then there are characters that are brought to new life. her voice is captivating.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Two unique newly weds get more than they bargained for on their honeymoon.

Any additional comments?

I'm looking forward to the next book. I loved the work done on all these books.

The narrator is a true story teller. I truly enjoy her ability to create characters with a slightly different tone.

Mmm 🤔 I can’t seem to put my fingers on it!!

I don’t know what is it but I truly enjoy this series. I read book one to five back to back and took a rest to read one of my romantic series new book and found myself looking for more of this amazing series. I love that the author and narrator can make feel so many emotions and just lose myself in the story like if am watching a movie. I loved every bit of this book. Book seven here I come… 😉

River Marked

Great story! Although, from an Alaska Native point of view, the rabbit in the chase after the ‘fight’ may be more from a rabbit presenting herself to coyote Mercy than anything else. The rabbit knew Mercy had to think over good meat, yes?

Alway enjoy this series! Lorelei King is an excellent narrator!

B rating overall...

My Review:
Overall.... 3.75
Performance... 4.75
Story.... 3.25

This book takes Mercy on a different type of adventure as it's just her and Adam on their honeymoon for most of the book and the bad guy is a water devil...something that Adam can't help fight since as a werewolf, he sinks in water. As a result, this book has a very different feel for Mercy. She doesn't have the pack or her pack of misfit paranormals helping her. Instead she has a lot of Indian-based lore legends who help out.

I'll admit that I missed the normal characters in this book. I love all those characters that Mercy is normally surrounded by. They all have this great camaraderie in their interactions that build the fun in the story. That was missing in this book for me as I just didn't have that same attachments to her band of helpers in this book. I wanted Ben and Stefan and Jessi and Sam and... well, you get the idea. The book simply wasn't as good without them.

The book does have more Adam and Mercy moments and I enjoyed that aspect of it. It's wonderful to see their relationship and trust grow past where either of them are truly comfortable. But they are comfortable in their love so they trust that when their instincts are screaming. I loved that Adam managed to hold back and simply watch while Mercy did her thing in this book. That's a true sign of love and I did enjoy that he has grown so much to trust her like that...even to the point of losing her.

Overall, this wasn't my favorite book in the series, but it was still important to the overall story arc and it was still enjoyable. I understand that there are going to be these types of books for me in any series and I'm definitely okay with that. The plus to that is that I was actually able to listen to the entire book on audio rather than skipping to the book where I could read faster myself. And honestly that's its own special treat just because the narrator, Lorelei King, does such an incredible job on this series. Her range of voices and accents is truly impressive. NEVER do I get confused on who's talking and with literally hundreds of characters in the entire series, that's truly impressive. On to book #6.

I love this series!

Would you consider the audio edition of River Marked to be better than the print version?

Just as good.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Coyote is equal parts exasperating and lovable. Mercy Thompson is an amazing heroine -- tough, smart, funny, warm, and wholly aware of her flaws -- absolutely someone I'd love to know.

Which scene was your favorite?

I love the surprise wedding scene and Mercy's meeting with Coyote's sisters.
