This second volume finds Royce and Hadrian on a quest to enlist the southern Nationalists to aid the ever-weakening kingdom of Melengar. Royce suspects an ancient wizard is manipulating them all, but to find the truth he’ll have to decipher Hadrian’s past—a past Hadrian wants to keep secret.

I am loving the series.

Two more great books! The stories of multiple characters are securely and elegantly woven together.

Another good one

This is a good old fashioned fantasy series. With a lot of new weird series (half of which are terrible) this is a nice one to run into unexpectedly for me.

The author has grown a lot

So the first half of the first book in the Rhirya Revelations series was a little rough, but all the potential for a wonderful story was there. There were the beginnings of fascinating world building, interesting characters, and intriguing plot points. That first book was a little clunky, but here in Rise of Empire Sullivan really hits his stride. All of the plot points and characters are coming together in interesting and surprising ways. He's also really improved his female character development, which is a relief after the first book didn't pass the Bechdel test until at least two thirds of the way through. This book ends with lots of open questions, so I'm very excited to finish the series! I think it's definitely worth it to push through the clunky first book (which is by no means bad) because the improvement comes quickly. Sullivan is showing that he can execute on the potential of the first book, and I'm looking forward to reading how the series ends!
