I loved this book just as much as the first one!

You explore more of Hadrian and Royce's histories while they work against the rise of the newly formed Nyphron Empire. You also see just how evil the Nyphron Empire is. There is no depth of depravity the rulers of the Nyphron Empire will go in their quest for power. We get to explore the Empire's treatment of their new Empress and it is really sad. This is a much darker book than the first but it works well. There are enough glimmers of hope that you'll keep listening to see what happens next.

One thing I really enjoyed was exploring Princess Arista's story and how she is dealing with all the events surrounding Melengar and the the Nyphron Empire. She is resourceful and strong yet she defiantly has insecurities that impact her choices.

My one criticism is the magic system and it's basically the same criticism I have for all modern fantasy's magic systems. It seems all new fantasy wants magic in their books but also want it severely underpowered. For me magic should be awe inspiring but here a simple slap ends the threat.

Tim Gerard Reynolds did a fantastic job at narrating. He has quickly become one of my favorite narrators.

Overall I think this is a fantastic book and I highly recommend it. Soon as I finished this one I just into the third and final book because it's so good you want to keep going.

Slightly obsessed

These books started a bit slow, as most great tales do. The world building has been eloquent and I am now fully submerged in the fates of our main characters. I have many questions, which I am hoping will be answered in the next book, and after reading many reviews, I believe that will happen. Michael Sullivan had earned his following and famed reviews and I’m glad to have picked up these books and they will definitely earn a spot on my re read list. I feel these stories only get better the more times they are read. The plot twist at the end of this book was one I should have foreseen, especially after Royce was explaining his thoughts on whom worked for whom in the end, but the set up for the next book has been eloquently done. Excited to move forward.
