Publisher's summary

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet.

Darrow - and Reds like him - are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity's overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies...even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

This was an incredible ride detailing the rising

This book is an exciting journey which sees young Darrow rise from the embers of a desperate situation, shaped by love and loss, strife and struggle, to attain a position of power from which he will ultimately exact his revenge.

Irish Hunger Ganes

Though a different story, the concept is somewhat similar. An uprising from a teenager to rebel against those in higher power and to change the hierarchy and social dynamic. A great story that started off a little slow, but a perfect beginning to lead into a very action-packed and heroic tale. I would highly recommend this book! Great narrator is well. (though the Irish accent took me an hour or two to get used to :-) )

Amazing! Loved it.

Starts slow in my opinion but it quickly picks up and submerged you into a fantastical brutal universe. Despite how harsh it all is, there's also love, loyalty and friendship and ends up making you feel good at the end - and wanting for more!

If I could, I would give this 10 stars

I stumbled across this book in a sci-fi Audible book sale. It sounded like a good book and what did I have to lose? It only cost $6.95. I bought it and I'm so glad that I did.

I was no good to my husband or for my house or family until I finished Red Rising. There was no downtime during the book. No boring time when I could check out. Nope, the story was so intriguing that I checked out of life. If you want to have good relationships with your family....don't buy this book:-) Just kidding, you'll have a good relationship, again. After you finished the whole series.

I simply loved it...

I strongly recommend this book. It is wonderful. Like Game of Thrones but in space and less depressing.

Great performance. Writing was odd at points

I think the performance was excellent. There were points that the writing was really odd to me. It's hard to describe, almost like things were stated as though they were implied but stated anyway. It didn't ruin anything at any point but it almost seemed like a proofreader went in and tossed things in to add detail but they don't fit the tone. I may be crazy though.

Fantastic

This book is probably worth 5 stars. Buy it, don't wait for Credits; just buy it. After finishing this book, I immediately looked it up to see if they were planning a movie for it yet, and i was thrilled to find that they have a film in the works.

My only complaint, if it really is a complaint, is that the meat of this book doesn't really fit. I know, strange that i could have an opinion as favorable and the main story arc doesn't seem to fit. Let me explain. The beginning of this book, and the later installments, all take place in/on future Mars and in space. With the human race grouped into classes, helium mining on Mars, and Space battles. Yet, the central arc of the first book, is based in a school of sorts that is rooted on Medieval times. It almost felt like Brown was working on two books, and then combined them into this when one fell through.

Now, the book works. It really works. But your almost getting two different realities for the first book. So take that with your grain of salt. The second and third installments really bring everything back to future/space genre and separate this from decent trilogies.

And really if you need a reason for this book, Reynolds is all you need! He was fantastic! One of the best I've ever heard!

It's not a risk to get this. Buy it! Today!

Spellbinding

Would you listen to Red Rising again? Why?

I loved this book. Maybe its because Ender's Game is my favorite book of all time and this seems like an almost word for word rewrite of Ender's game and Ender's Shadow; it doesn't matter. It's an intriguing story told by one of the most wonderful voice actors I have ever listened to
