Publisher's summary

A New York Times best seller!

They burned her home.

They stole her brother and sister.

But vengeance is following.

Shy South hoped to bury her bloody past and ride away smiling, but she'll have to sharpen up some bad old ways to get her family back, and she's not a woman to flinch from what needs doing. She sets off in pursuit with only a pair of oxen and her cowardly old step father Lamb for company. But it turns out Lamb's buried a bloody past of his own. And out in the lawless Far Country the past never stays buried.

Their journey will take them across the barren plains to a frontier town gripped by gold fever, through feud, duel and massacre, high into the unmapped mountains to a reckoning with the Ghosts. Even worse, it will force them into an alliance with Nicomo Cosca, infamous soldier of fortune, and his feckless lawyer Temple, two men no one should ever have to trust....

Red Country takes place in the same world as the First Law trilogy, Best Served Cold, and The Heroes. This novel also represents the return of Logen Ninefingers, one of Abercrombie's most beloved characters.

More First Law excellence

Joe Abercrombie has really created something special with the First Law. I've never enjoyed another series as much. Hope one day he'll write another.

Masterful

Masterfully written and performed by Abercrombie and Pacey. The humor and irony abound, but they are used adeptly. The audio book is as lovely to hear as the test is to read.

Lamb it is

Joe Abercrombie’s Red Country was a good story, continued the adventures of some really familiar characters. Steven Pacey did another amazing job with the narration. DRmz 11-23-2022

arguably the best of the 3 standalones

My favorite of the standalones is Best Served Cold.
That being said...

This story centers on Shy, a close relative of one of all us First Law readers' favorite characters. Abercrombie masterfully weaves a tale of human character, and resolution, and regret, around her search to rescue her stolen siblings.

Don't expect a super fast pace. Also, this book probably introduces the least new characters (that survive). There are some meaningful heart wrenchers throughout. In fact, they may prepare you for those you'll have to endure in the following Age of Madness sequel series.

I've read nine out of the ten books at least TWICE!
I consider myself a somewhat hard critic and the First Law series is among my favorite contemporary fantasy universes. This story is an all too welcome addition.

Excellent characters, amazing narration

I have listened to all the First Law novels now. They may not be the most creative of fantasy novels, but as the real-life geopolitical underpinnings are not particularly veiled, these stories encourage an honest evaluation of history and humanity in a way most fantasy does not. I thoroughly enjoy the moral ambivalence of the characters and plots. Logan in particular is a superb hero/anti-hero. Also, Steven Percy is probably the best narrator I’ve ever listened to and I have listened to a truly embarrassing number of audiobooks. Highly recommend for lovers of fantasy, history and philosophy.

Thrilling western style adventure in the First Law world

This side adventure may be the best in my opinion. There’s plenty of plot and character development to dig your teeth into. Steven Pacey’s performance is a class act as always. I didn’t like the fate of at least one main character but I found that apart from that it was a great story.
