Publisher's summary

A New York Times best seller!

They burned her home.

They stole her brother and sister.

But vengeance is following.

Shy South hoped to bury her bloody past and ride away smiling, but she'll have to sharpen up some bad old ways to get her family back, and she's not a woman to flinch from what needs doing. She sets off in pursuit with only a pair of oxen and her cowardly old step father Lamb for company. But it turns out Lamb's buried a bloody past of his own. And out in the lawless Far Country the past never stays buried.

Their journey will take them across the barren plains to a frontier town gripped by gold fever, through feud, duel and massacre, high into the unmapped mountains to a reckoning with the Ghosts. Even worse, it will force them into an alliance with Nicomo Cosca, infamous soldier of fortune, and his feckless lawyer Temple, two men no one should ever have to trust....

Red Country takes place in the same world as the First Law trilogy, Best Served Cold, and The Heroes. This novel also represents the return of Logen Ninefingers, one of Abercrombie's most beloved characters.

Cynical Fantasy at its Very Best

What did you love best about Red Country?

The characters in any Joe Abercrombie are as hard boiled at it gets. Its like Raymond Chandler meets George RR Martin. Or maybe its a fantasy version of an Eastwood Spaghetti Western. Red Country is a fun, violent imaginary romp.

What about Steven Pacey’s performance did you like?

Great narrator - perfect pairing with Abercrombie.

Fantastic

Great, complex characters. Thoughtful writing. Great insights into human nature and life. Also: brutal. And occasionally funny. I never write reviews, but Joe Abercrombie speaks to my inner barbarian.

Epic fantasy done right so don't miss it!

Joe Abercrombie brings the fantasy alive. I was amazed throughout the series with how well the character and story development is. He also does an excellent job with the transition between various character's stories/experiences, which keeps the story from slowing down and enhances the reading experience. These transitions are unique in that they are not confined to each book, but rather intertwine throughout the series.

The author shows respect to his readers with the beginning of each book by not wasting the first few chapters recapping the previous book I just finished! With each book I found myself making more and more time for listening to the story, as well as sacrificing sleep as I could not stop listening.

Even though each book is written with such quality that they can be read independently I highly recommend reading the books in order. By following the series it will allow the reader to fully enjoy the many nuances of each book and escape deeper into story and world of fantasy. Here is the chronologic order:

The Blade Itself - 2006
Before They Are Hanged - 2007
Last Argument of Kings - 2008
Best Served Cold - 2009
The Heroes - 2011
Red Country - 2012

All the books in this series earned 5 stars in all categories from me and is the first series other than Lord of the Rings that I have read more than once and found it to be even better than the first read.

Amazing!

If you are looking to fill the void after the First Law trilogy this will do. I skipped the other two books in the serious and went straight for this one because of an old friend I missed. You won't be disappointed if that is who you are looking for. Say one thing for him, say he never disappoints.

He's finally back!

The war is over and people are settling in to the previous way of life, or setting out for the western borders, looking for a new way of life. Shy South's brother and sister are stolen, toted off to who knows where, so she takes off with her cowardly stepfather Lamb, to find them. This story is reminiscent of the California gold rush, with greed being at center stage. As with other books in this series, the majority of the characters are unsavory to say the least, but sometimes (not all) they do end up redeeming themselves, for a while anyway. Bringing back my favorite character from the First Law Trilogy, along with a couple of others, was a real treat, along with more of Steven Pacey's adaptation, is an episode not to be missed by First Law fans.

Don't say it!

This book does not require you to have read the previous books, however, the story is even richer if you have. I think by never saying the name creates an amazing tension. I screamed at them to say it, but I'm glad that they never did.

Steven Pacey is an incredible narrator. His voices add so much to an already great story. Nickom Kosska is twice the character because of Pacey.

Thank you!

Wow. Fantasy moves to becoming a Western.

This book is only missing pistols to be a western. I love how Joe bring back (Logan) for one more story. Also, just a fun story. Increasing tension. Good locations. Interesting tie to the lore of the First World through the Dragon people. I wish Cold Shivers was in there a bit more but his additions were perfect.
