Publisher's summary

The vampires of Asheville, North Carolina, want to establish their own clan, but since they owe loyalty to the Master Vampire of New Orleans, they must work out the terms with him. To come up with an equitable solution, he sends an envoy with the best bodyguard blood money can buy: skinwalker Jane Yellowrock.

But when a group of local campers are attacked by something fanged, Jane goes from escort to investigator. Is it a rogue-vampire, shapechanger, or witch? Or something else magical? Unless she wants to face a very angry master vampire, she will have to work overtime to find the killer. It's a good thing she's worth every penny.

terrific ride...

Hunter is a skillful wordsmith whose witty and creative storytelling is thorougly enjoyable. Khristine Hvam is to be saluted for excellent narrating. Jane Yellowrock our kickass heroine is also a really good churchgoing girl and her life is hugely complicated... oh and Beast...
Recommended for all urban fantasy lovers who do not care for swearing or blasphemy, but still appreciate well- written, unpredictable, imaginative work. Hunter exhibits a great stock of knowledge which is unobstrusively and often with humour, interwoven creatively into the development of the characters and plot.
Rated 4 1/2 because it is an excellent (audible) experience

Good gravy....

Talk about a book that kept me entranced. Dang it. Lol

This story has a bit everything. It’s intense, erratic, utterly crazy, fantastic and a little heart breaking. Jane is working as a body guard for one of Leo’s men during some camp talks... and ya know things had to go up in smoke.

Add to that the fact that Jane’s best-friend Molly and her family of witches are put into serious danger by one of their own... and you have a book that will have you flipping pages until you hit the very last page.

If not for Jane’s heart and tenacity... this story wouldn’t be half as good and crazy as it is. I can’t wait for the next book.

Excellent Story Line

I have enjoyed the entire series, but honestly this is one of my favorite. Narrator is great and the story line built on the previous books, but you could still understand the plot even if you didn't read the previous stories.

Vampires & witches & were-wolves & leopards OH MY!!

In this 4th book of the great Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter-all so far read by the very expressive Khristine Hvam...a true voice changer herself...Jane must deal with a plethora of super-naturals as well as her own continued goofs in assuming she knows what the vamps really want from her.

This is the most exciting of the series so far. There is more of Jane's "Beast" giving inner voice about 'stupid Jane's decision'. Hvam does a wonderful Beast. So much anger at her position as beta cat, so much dislike for Jane 'stealing her soul' hundreds of years ago, yet Beast, as written by Hunter, has become a major player in the series. Were I asked my favorite character in this series, I'd have to pick Beast..she has developed the most IMO.

As with many series, there is quite a bit of repetition of Jane's history..the books can be read as stand alone but are best when read in the order written. With one exception...I think the series of short stories and novellas "Cat o' 9 tales" could be read first. I read it after I'd listened for the majority of the books. It answered many questions I had wondered about and didn't act too badly as a spoiler for the series. Especially the history of Jane and Beast, Rick's torture at the hands of a witch-vampire and several other open ended questions..even some from this novel.

Enjoy the series! Well worth a bunch of credits.

This narrator is great

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, one who likes Urban fantasy

Would you be willing to try another book from Faith Hunter? Why or why not?

Yes. This series reminds me of the early Anita Blake. Lots of action, emphasis on weaponry and police tactics, more mystery and a little tiny bit of romance. If you are a pure romance fan, you won't like this book. If you like mysteries and action, you will love it.

Which character – as performed by Khristine Hvam – was your favorite?

Christin Hvam MAKES Beast. As written Beast's lines are somewhat stilted but Ms. Hvam makes Beast's voice really come to life.

When a witch goes bad

If you could sum up Raven Cursed in three words, what would they be?

Witch goes really badMitheran or vampires are subject to human frailties, too.Ricky Beau is going into his second full moon and will he change into a werepanther.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Raven Cursed?

One of the most memorable moments in this book is when Jane is practicing with the Rober twins. She is so fast holding off the two prima's that it upsets Derek.

What does Khristine Hvam bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Kristine Hvam keeps it alive enough that if you are listening to it fall asleep you wake up when it ends.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Who is killing and eating all the campers in this county!

Any additional comments?

With so much action, as in all of Faith Hunter's books, it is very difficult to put this book down. I have listened to it twice. In the last two weeks. Gals you could get you guy friends to listen to it in there is enough macho going on for any card carrying guy..

pivotal

I'm reading back through the series now that Cold Reign has come out. Raven Cursed is required for story development.

Also, I realized today just how many voices Hvam had to do in this one: Jane, Bruiser, Leo, Angie Baby, Baby Evan, Molly, Big Evan, Rick, Kemcat, Evangeline, Amelia and Reagan and the other sisters, Gregoire, Brandon, Brian, Wrassler, Derick Lee, Shaddock, Dacy, Adelaide. This might just be the largest cast in one book.

far

Jane Yellowrock makes dumb mistakes. Shes does a lot of work for vampires. You'd think she'd make an effort to learn their customs and rules. In any event she expects declaring herself an enforcer to stop an altercation. Easy to predict thats going to come back in a later book. There's a chapter where her best friends son warns her of bespelled family members. This includes her best friend. She knows her best freind remains bespelled. She knows her god daughter has a high degree of precognition. She calls Jane multiple times. What does Jane do? Ignores the messages until the last minute. In a previous book she gets custody of a dangerous magical artifact. This artifact is one vampires and witches would like to posses. So like idiot, she leaves the thing in New Orleans w minimal security to be stolen. She briefly regains it. Not having learned her lesson, she leaves it unprotected and it's stolen again. Rick her former beau comes across as an idiot. He seems to be there as a filler. Rick says he can spread lycanthropy by sex. The virus is spread by bites. That should includ the mouth with all that salivia. I'd expect kissing to also be avoided. Why the cuddle session? The visiting werelepard is pictured in earlier book as intelligent. He's visiting from a foreign nation as a type of ambassador. In this book he comes across dumb, and shallow. I found that annoying.

The Mystery continues

Loved the story line, the danger and mystery that is Jane Yellowrock continues.
Great narration, her voice so matches the artist rendition of Jane so I see her clearly in my mind as I'm listening. Love the way she voices the other characters as well.
As the story progresses and with each job she takes, Jane more of her past and possibly her future is revealed. There are numerous hints about her and how she might be more than just a Skin Walker. Conflicting with her birthright is her Christian upbringing effecting how she does her job. But always in her mind is the love she has for Molly and her children, especially Angelina who is showing far more gifts from her own birthright that can be dangerous not only for her but for everyone around her that might want to use her and her Witch family. the storyline just keeps getting better and better...loved it.
