Publisher's summary

The White Council of Wizards has drafted Harry Dresden as a Warden and assigned him to look into rumors of black magic in Chicago. Malevolent entities that feed on fear are loose in the Windy City, but it's all in a day's work for a wizard, his faithful dog, and a talking skull named Bob.

Critic reviews

"One of the most enjoyable marriages of the fantasy and mystery genres on the shelves.” (Cinescape)

“Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry’s wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot." (Booklist)

Oh the feels.

With each book I fall more and more in love with Dresden. It is such a compelling storyline, so many characters really came alive in this book, the depth of them.

Great Wizard Series

Jim Butcher is awesome. One of the best series Ever. However, I wish he could give Dresden a little down time occasionally... poor guy never even gets to sleep, much less Sleep With someone... seriously a terrific book... love the reintroduction of characters.

Voice not impressive

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend any Jim Butcher book to a friend or anyone else. However, no offense meant to the reader, but I am used to hearing the more melifluous tones of English (UK) Audible Readers so was not too impressed with the flat North American tones of James Marsters. Regardless, it is a good story.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden is always good for a chuckle even in the face of most dire circumstances.

so far my favorite

I am burning through these stories fairly quickly. so far this has been my favorite. Not too much gloom and doom, not too much nor too little action. Finally a bit more story telling and character development.

love love love

I love how Dresden both relates to and feels for rebellious youth yet still has many of the same "overbearing" tendencies that "controlling authority figures do." yet while you know the other characters don't have the benefit of heating his internal voice, somehow everyone knows where that overbearing nature is coming from. he strongly values the privilege of choice. but push come to shove, he puts that value aside not only for the benefit of others like many controlling figures. he also seems to do it while somehow still conveying that he highly values the privelege of choices and will return those privileges at the soonest point clear of danger.

A Profound Entry!

Definitely my favorite narrative of the Dresden Files so far. There is a definite subtext to this book that felt lacking in the others. The theme of Justice is clear from the first page to the last. Jim Butcher has definitely outdone himself with this one!
