Publisher's summary

The White Council of Wizards has drafted Harry Dresden as a Warden and assigned him to look into rumors of black magic in Chicago. Malevolent entities that feed on fear are loose in the Windy City, but it's all in a day's work for a wizard, his faithful dog, and a talking skull named Bob.

Critic reviews

"One of the most enjoyable marriages of the fantasy and mystery genres on the shelves.” (Cinescape)

“Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry’s wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot." (Booklist)

Great addition to an awesome series

MAGIC. MYSTERY. CHARACTER CONTINUITY. STORY LINE CONTINUITY. GREAT BOOKS ALTOGETHER.
My sister-in-law's husband put me on to these books. I was sceptical at first, never really care for the mystery/detective genre. But after the first book, I was hooked. the story is amazing, the narrator is thankfully always the same, it's one of the rare types of books that contain the same characters from all the previous ones, and they recall things from all the other books many times through out each story.
Give it a chance and you won't be disappointed.

Good Va Evil

This series is just so good. I’ve just finished my nineth book and starting to see how the themes of good and evil, right and wrong and all the grey in between manifests itself within the characters. The narration is top notch.

Every book just gets better!

Every book just gets better! I’m hooked and devouring each one. I feel a connection with each character and this book really connected a few characters and relationships that were not quite clear yet.

Jim Butcher’s Brilliance.

Incredible. Genius. Good pace. Bits of humor. One of the best series I’ve ever read. Thank you!

One of my favorites

It is a great story and we get to hear more about the different characters in Dresdens life and we get to hear more about how the council works.

Great story line

Love the way early books tie into the present story line. It is becoming a complex and interesting read.

So good!

"Thomas and I just stood there trying to look theologically invisible." :-) This was a great story! There are a ton of things that happen in this one that really deeply the overall plot. So MANY twists and turns. Excellent!

Kudos to all involved!

I've not read any of the Dresden Files books previously and was worried about starting at book 8 (the first 7 not available in audio). I needn't have worried. Butcher does a great job with catching up new readers without making it sound like exposition. The characters are marvelous and brought stunningly to life by James Marsters. I'll certainly be getting all the other Dresden Files available!

Started to Drag A Little at The End But....

Still as great an epic story as always. I'm a loyal reader of the series. This one introduced some interesting new characters and reconnected relationships I was longing to see back together. Towards the end it seemed there could have been earlier stopping points, but it revealed some seeds for the future storyline.

Better than 7, now I want 9

Is it possible for a guy to have more girl trouble? Don't think so. I enjoyed this one more than the last two because it wasn't overly complicated and it advanced story lines. I was hoping to put down the series but, maybe not yet.
