Publisher's summary

The White Council of Wizards has drafted Harry Dresden as a Warden and assigned him to look into rumors of black magic in Chicago. Malevolent entities that feed on fear are loose in the Windy City, but it's all in a day's work for a wizard, his faithful dog, and a talking skull named Bob.

Critic reviews

"One of the most enjoyable marriages of the fantasy and mystery genres on the shelves.” (Cinescape)

“Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry’s wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot." (Booklist)

The plot thickens!

Amazing narration with a plot a mile north of fantastic. All my big words were used up in my 5 star reviews for the previous books in the series, so lets pretend my review is deep, respectful, clever, and full of praise for Butcher and the narrator, James Marsters.

New Revelations

Jim Butcher is a master at two things in the Harry Dresden novels: describing people’s and creatures’ appearances and battle sequences. The reader, James Marsters, is a master at reading these novels. I read the books and later listen to them. It’s a great combination.

My favorite so far.

The story really picks up and drives home the character of Harry Dresden. As if seeing into the mind of your favorite hero and seeing stark fragility of his own humanity.

I love this series!

One of those you don't want to pause, just listen to all the time! Gripping, funny, touching, all the things we've come to love and expect from the Dresden Files.

great book

one of the best series I have read/listened to in a long while though I love my epic fantasy that each entry is like it's own series it's self like the work of Sanderson or his like Jim Butcher with this series has managed to convey that sense of epic wonder in smaller more bite size books that wrap up nicely at the end so when you have to wait for the next entry for a while you still feel saticfied
