Publisher's summary

Out of the Silent Planet is the first novel of the Cosmic Trilogy, considered to be C.S. Lewis' chief contribution to the science fiction genre. The trilogy concerns Dr. Ransom, a linguist, who, like Christ, was offered a ransom for mankind. The first two novels are planetary romances with elements of medieval mythology. Each planet is seen as having a tutelary spirit; those of the other planets are both good and accessible, while that of Earth is fallen, twisted, and not known directly by most humans. The story is powerfully imagined, and the effects of lesser gravity on Martian planet and animal life is vividly rendered.

Interesting

Except for the fast space ship, there really isn't a lot of fantastic science fiction in this book for today, though I'm sure it was fantastic when it was written. There is an interesting study of a school of thought for some scientists represented in the book though. Ultimately, I feel it is still a religious commentary in a science fiction setting. I prefer The Chronicles of Narnia so far, but very much want to finish all the books in this series.

A wonderful, thought provoking story

Excellent author, I love C.S. Lewis! He introduced several new ways to think about things to me. The voice acting is excellent. A pleasure to listen to!
Temper your expectations about the science foundations, and remember this was published almost a century ago, and you will have a wonderful experience.

Worth the read!

I like that God is in this story, and how angels seem to rule over the persons of each planet. The idea that we (persons of earth) have no rulers is interesting as well…

A Gem Among Scifi Classics

This is my first time going through C.S. Lewis' Ransom Trilogy and I am absolutely delighted. The story is a little uneventful, but as Ransom said in the postscript letters: "...this is just the prologue." I am looking forward to the rest of the trilogy!

The narration is good, if a bit flat and monotone.

Making the unfamiliar, familiar and the familiar unfamiliar.

C.S. Lewis takes the listener along with Randsom, and throws you into an unknown world, makes it familiar and makes you second guess, and even think deeper about, the familiar. a great philosophical journey into what makes mankind bent, and yet so eager to spread its bentness.
