Publisher's summary

An io9 Can't Miss Science Fiction and Fantasy title in March 2014.

Martin Banks is just a normal guy who has made an abnormal discovery: he can manipulate reality, thanks to reality being nothing more than a computer program. With every use of this ability, though, Martin finds his little “tweaks” have not escaped notice. Rather than face prosecution, he decides instead to travel back in time to the Middle Ages and pose as a wizard.

What could possibly go wrong?

An American hacker in King Arthur’s court, Martin must now train to become a full-fledged master of his powers, discover the truth behind the ancient wizard Merlin…and not, y’know, die or anything.

Comp. Sci. Fantasy!

This story took a pleasant spin off of a computer scientists fantasy. Where it blended the matrix, fantasy role play, and real life together. There were parts of the story were I felt it was lacking some details that I would have like to know, but aside from that really enjoyed it. Performance was equally entertaining! Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Love this series

I love Scott Meyer’s Magic series. It is so much fun. The characters are quirky. I love when the nerds get together and do interesting things. I like the alternative universe and the take on magic/life being part of the bigger picture of the book. It does leave a few holes but I’m willing to suspend my disbelief for some fun, laughter and the overall story.

A really cool concept!

I really enjoyed this book as well as the next two books. I cared about the characters and they are funny as hell. Great narration.

Disappointing SF and comedy

I had high hopes for this book based on the premise and reviews but was sorley disappointed. The voice talent was the best part, pulling off a number of characters. I hoping for more a more thoughtful scientific behind universe created but most of that was hand waved away. What was left was a fairly predictable plot that lacked a strong narrative. I won't bother with the next book.

Just plain fun

What made the experience of listening to Off to Be the Wizard the most enjoyable?

It's fun and lighthearted without being stupid. All in a sci-fi/fantasy setting.

Any additional comments?

Why aren't there more fun light reading books like this?

Great!!!

This book was a lot of fun! I had a hard time putting it down. The story itself is unique and original, with tons of old school flavor. And as always Luke Daniels narration is superb!!!

Best bang for your buck

Any additional comments?

I don't think you can buy a better series for less than 1 credit a book. Heck, it would be tough to buy a better series for a whole credit per book.

Really great Story

If you could sum up Off to Be the Wizard in three words, what would they be?

Creative idea and a PHENOMENAL NARRATOR!

(Is that three words?)

What did you like best about this story?

The creative concept of lives being a computer program; the introduction of the female wizard; and the ending with the banished wizard! Great, great, story!!!!

What does Luke Daniels bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Unmatched Vocal Prowess!!!!!!! He is the reigning King of Narration!!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Anxiety from anticipation and plot twists!! Loved the wizards secret room!

Any additional comments?

Going to the next book in series!!

Give it a chance!

This book is the first of one of my all-time favorite series. I absolutely LOVE the Magic 2.0 series.

But after recommending it to many friends and finding myself having to give the same advice each time, I'm going to do it here for the benefit of everyone.

Hang tough. I genuinely thought about exchanging this book but stuck through it, and am glad I did.

Character development--as in, characters actually growing and changing and learning--are a STRONG part of the entire series. If you've never read a Scott Meyer book before, then let me tell you the whole thing is intentional and with reason. You will know exactly what I'm talking about if you run across the same sticking points as me and my friends.

If not, then disregard all of this and carry on enjoying this book and the AMAZING series is spawns!
