Publisher's summary

An io9 Can't Miss Science Fiction and Fantasy title in March 2014.

Martin Banks is just a normal guy who has made an abnormal discovery: he can manipulate reality, thanks to reality being nothing more than a computer program. With every use of this ability, though, Martin finds his little “tweaks” have not escaped notice. Rather than face prosecution, he decides instead to travel back in time to the Middle Ages and pose as a wizard.

What could possibly go wrong?

An American hacker in King Arthur’s court, Martin must now train to become a full-fledged master of his powers, discover the truth behind the ancient wizard Merlin…and not, y’know, die or anything.

Fun story

Off to Be the Wizard is a great start to a fun series. The book and characters do not take themselves too seriously which translates to a entertaining listen that does not require much effort to follow along. Simple, but well put together storyline that will have you picking up book 2 to see where the characters go next (*hint Atlantis)

Funny and thought provoking

this book was both funny and thought provoking. The whole concept of realizing what the world is really like and going back and time to become a wizard is just neat to think about, and the narration is performed perfectly. Bravo to the producers and voice talent, this book had me laughing out loud multiple times.

Every nerds fantasy

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

A very light and easy read. There were a few major logic gaps that bothered me, but its an entertaining story which explores an interesting premise.

Fantasy par excellent

While this book is light and fluffy it gets your attention and holds it right from the start. It leaves you to make up your own mind about the characters in the story and leaves you wanting to start this next book. If you don't mind computers (as compared to can't stand them) and enjoy an excellent fantasy then I highly recommend this book to you.

A must read.

Would you listen to Off to Be the Wizard again? Why?

I have listened to this book 4 times. Each time it brings a laugh.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Philip is by far my favorite character. He has the best responses to most simple answers.

Have you listened to any of Luke Daniels’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to all of the Magic 2.0. Luke Daniels does a great job with the performance.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book and the rest in the series has made me laugh and smile with great joy as it touches the inner geek.

Any additional comments?

This is a must read.

Way better than expected

I was just hoping it would be good enough to get me through the airport but this turned out to be a truly great book. It's like the matrix but more fun.

Maybe it's for young adults or adolescents

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No, I would've listened to some other books. I think this book is for adolescent or young adult. I came across this book on twitter and saw the rating was good and wanted to have a try, but the storytelling is good, but the story and plot itself is boring.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I don't know and I don't care.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Luke Daniels?

I don't know why but if you played at over 1.25x speed, his narration became harder to hear clearly especially while commuting. My last try of audiobook which was Red Notice, the book wrote by Bill Browder, was very good, the narration is perfect, even if I played at 1.5x speed.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No, too shallow.
