Publisher's summary

Twenty years ago, it was as if someone turned on a light. The future blazed into existence with each deliberate word that William Gibson laid down. The winner of Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Awards, Neuromancer didn't just explode onto the science fiction scene - it permeated into the collective consciousness, culture, science, and technology.Today, there is only one science fiction masterpiece to thank for the term "cyberpunk," for easing the way into the information age and Internet society. Neuromancer's virtual reality has become real. And yet, William Gibson's gritty, sophisticated vision still manages to inspire the minds that lead mankind ever further into the future.

Critic reviews

"Unforgettable ... The richness of Gibson’s world is incredible.” (Chicago Sun-Times)

“Freshly imagined, compellingly detailed, and chilling in its implications.” (The New York Times)

"Serious science fiction and fantasy readers cannot resist the classics.... That’s what makes the Penguin Galaxy series so appealing.... Each of the novels here has earned their place in the halls of literary history.... Their small form factor and minimalist covers call out to readers and make them fun to read all over again.” (Kirkus Reviews)

one of the greatest scifi stories

im surprised at how relevant neuromancer still is, how well it has aged...
THE MATRIX, GHOST IN THE SHELL, OTHERLAND and many more have clearly.been.inspired by neuromancer.
if youre a fan of any of these, neuromancer is a must read.
it took me a couple of chapters to get hooked, but once youre hooked, its a really great ride

If you wonder what cyberpunk is.

Gibson is amazing at world creation and fully real characters. even in 2017 Neuromancer feels current and enjoyable. The matrix is amazing and the tech is real as the world. One of my all time favorites.

Dense, but SO worth the effort

Not the easiest read, but rewards the effort. A lot of sci fi that came after might not exist without it. The afterword even claims the internet we know today might not exist without this book, and that might even be true.

Re-reading 30ish years later, still good

This book was ground breaking when I first read it and created a genre. It still holds up all these years later, although doesn't seem quite as ground breaking after all that followed it. Gibson's writing is dense with imagery, and the plot while a little hard to follow amidst the imagery is still exciting.

Terrible narration

The story might have been half decent, but I couldn’t get through the awful narration to find out.

Bad narration

The story itself is fantastic, but I have to agree with other reviewers that the narration is not fitting for the story. The narration for the female characters is cringe-worthy, and for the majority of the story I personally find it quite dull. I love this story but am constantly having a hard time following it because the narrator's style is distractingly boring and dull. You might want to just read this the old fashioned way if you have the option.

exciting book....read...real...slooooowww

"F*** it al.... I, want. ,buuuuzz"

read this book when it came out. Worked at a book store and it was in the stack of stuff I was putting away in it and never saw the Shelf. Bought it right then and there to go home and read it. Deserving it is of the Hugo, the nebula, and the Philip K dick Awards and the first book in history to receive all three. it is masterfully written with an excitement that she earns from page to page. The Robertson Dean just doesn't make that happen. Halfway through I'm going to have to speed up the read so I can just get through it. It's slow man some parts are a little more exciting but generally if I had to judge the book based on the reading probably never would have bought it off the shelf. Fortunately books on tape we're not that common and sort of expensive. And this wasn't available on tape anyway and most the time books on tape or read by some low voiced baritone kudrone Don word after word dragging out an exciting tale to the very limit of patience and endurance and tolerance. Ugg and Ugg some more. fantastic book. Oh can somebody anybody else with a sense of mood and excitement the talent for voices and inflection please please please re-read this book.

Great story

I came to this story really late, but it is amazing looking back at what Golding got right. Was he ahead of his time, or did he inspire the world we live in? We may never know. I will admit that the narrative style is a little hard to qrap.yiur head around early on, especially in this format, but once it clicked I liked it a lot.

On my second pass I couldn't put this book down.

I loved it. the author doesn't dumb it down for you and that's refreshing. my first pass I was not ready for this book. I didn't give it the proper chance. my second pass I couldn't put it down. Also the narrator's does a great job here. reading this in 2020 this author was way ahead of his time.
