Publisher's summary

When Sara and Jamie discovered the artifacts, they sensed the pull of a dim, distant place, a world of misty forests, ancient magics, mythical beings, ageless bards...and restless evil.

Now, with their friends and enemies alike - Blue, the biker; Keiran, the folk musician; the inspector from the RCMP; and the mysterious Tom Hengyr - Sara and Jamie are drawn into this enchanted land through the portals of a sprawling downtown edifice that straddles two worlds.

From ancient Wales to the streets of Ottawa today, Moonheart entrances listeners with its tale of this world and the other one at the very edge of sight. A tale of music, motorcycles, and fey folk beyond the shadows of the moon, Moonheart is pure magic.

Critic reviews

"He shows that, far from being mere escapism, contemporary fantasy can be the deep mythic literature of our time." (Fantasy and Science Fiction)

What a unique story…

This is one of the most unique fantasy stories I’ve ever encountered. Nicely narrated. Unexpected plot turns kept me intrigued.

Great idea, but just wasn't executed well.

The concept was great, but I just wasn't drawn in like I was with Eyes Like Leaves. The story seemed poorly developed considering the potential it had.

de Lint needs an editor

What disappointed you about Moonheart?

This books drags so long and so much that it is exhausting to listen to it.

Would you ever listen to anything by Charles de Lint again?

Possibly. Memory and Dreams was a bit of a dragger too, but the story line was interesting enough to keep me plodding through. Not so with Moonheart.

Did Paul Michael Garcia do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes. You can hear the different characters with change of pitch, tone, and appropriate pauses

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

None. I found it impossible to stay interested enough to even remember the names of the characters, let alone have a reaction to them.

Any additional comments?

N/A

Couldn't even finish it.

This book jumped around so much, I never had a clue what was going on. I kept thinking I had missed something and would rewind, but no, the author just suddenly changed subjects, and had characters seemingly in mid-conversation without ever being introduced. Also, he constantly used phrases like "Lord dying Jesus" as curses and I found that very offensive. I made it to chapter 5 or 6 and then gave up on it. I think this is my last de Lint.

Average Narration, Poor Story

The narrator was fine, nothing special but not bad.

The story however... goodness, what a waste of time. You've got two instances of love at first sight (terrible sex puns included), very little story cohesion, shallow, forgettable characters, and a weird fetish for tabacco. There's this terribly forced 'mystery' aspect that drove me nuts too. I would not recommend this as a read.

7th Grade Level

Two dimensional characters and hackneyed dialog prevented me from caring about anyone in the story.
