Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential - Quick, who directed The Evil Dead? What action hero starred in The Blob? Which movie studio became synonymous with horror for producing Frankenstein and The Wolf Man? If you can answer these questions correctly, you'll likely be thrilled with Monster Hunter International. B-movie aficionados know there's a fine line between gleefully gory camp and flat-out dross. Not to worry, Monster Hunter International knows the line. Oliver Wyman brings just the right amount of bombastic, smirking swagger to this story of big guns, big action, and a heck of a lot of monsters. —Michael

Publisher's summary

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a 14th story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer.

It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Officially secret, some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. On the other side are the people who kill monsters for a living. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

It's actually a pretty sweet gig, except for one little problem. An ancient entity known as the Cursed One has returned to settle a centuries-old vendetta. Should the Cursed One succeed, it means the end of the world, and MHI is the only thing standing in his way.

With the clock ticking towards Armageddon, Owen finds himself trapped between legions of undead minions, belligerent federal agents, a cryptic ghost who has taken up residence inside his head, and the cursed family of the woman he loves. Business is good.... Welcome to Monster Hunter International.

Intensity from Beginning to End!

This book actually exceeded my expectations... While I thought it was going to be a gun-nut's fantasy chock full of violence and gore, it was that, and so much more. The story was quite sophisticated, and at times it felt almost like epic fantasy. A few of the characters were really enjoyable. There was a ton of backstory to the series, and everything was well thought out.

It also has what are probably the most intense, incredible gun battle sequences I've ever read. They really suck you in and have you cheering for the good guys. The comedic moments in the book were great, too, from the dry humor amongst the team, to the not-so-subtle jabs at paranormal romance series such as "Twilight". Very cool.

While there were some minor deus ex machina moments, the foreshadowing done to build those up wasn't too shabby. The story waxes extremely epic though, as it builds to the end, pushing the bounds of believability, and I think it went a little over the top for an opening book. My other complaint would probably be that I got tired of the main character pining over Julie like a lovesick puppy and acting like a teenager sometimes.

I know they are quite different, but for an opening book I enjoyed this much more than, say, the Dresden Files. The intensity really holds up from beginning through to the end.

I'm a sucker for monsters and heros! There are plenty of both in this "easy listener"!

Good Book

What made the experience of listening to Monster Hunter International the most enjoyable?

Cool world with lots of interesting monsters. Book is written well and keeps you engrossed.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The MC is sort of lame. He's really strong and can shoot guns REALLY WELL. Other than that he's just plain old boring and keeps getting beat up and yet somehow regenerates each time. Each fight scene is absolutely impossible until something completely random happens to turn the tide. MC does not grow but epilogue shows potential to change this. Other monsters are just briefly mentioned and do not go very deep into their worlds. The villains are pretty one sided and could use more depth.

Which scene was your favorite?

The opening scene gets you going right into the story. Most of the other fight sccenes are similar with more guns.

Any additional comments?

Good book with some things that I would have changed. I will try out the next one in the series. I wish you could give half stars as i would rate this 3.5 stars.

Great narration.

Oliver Wyman, who narrates the story has many different voices for the characters. It’s very distinct and sounds very different from one character to another. This makes the audiobook more interesting and enjoyable compared to other ones I have heard.

This was a blast to listen. I like the take on the hero being the big guy. If you like guns, monsters, and a good story you will enjoy this book.
