Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential - Quick, who directed The Evil Dead? What action hero starred in The Blob? Which movie studio became synonymous with horror for producing Frankenstein and The Wolf Man? If you can answer these questions correctly, you'll likely be thrilled with Monster Hunter International. B-movie aficionados know there's a fine line between gleefully gory camp and flat-out dross. Not to worry, Monster Hunter International knows the line. Oliver Wyman brings just the right amount of bombastic, smirking swagger to this story of big guns, big action, and a heck of a lot of monsters. —Michael

Publisher's summary

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a 14th story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer.

It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Officially secret, some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. On the other side are the people who kill monsters for a living. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

It's actually a pretty sweet gig, except for one little problem. An ancient entity known as the Cursed One has returned to settle a centuries-old vendetta. Should the Cursed One succeed, it means the end of the world, and MHI is the only thing standing in his way.

With the clock ticking towards Armageddon, Owen finds himself trapped between legions of undead minions, belligerent federal agents, a cryptic ghost who has taken up residence inside his head, and the cursed family of the woman he loves. Business is good.... Welcome to Monster Hunter International.

Overall it's fun. The action is exciting and the descriptions are clear and vivid. on the other hand the dialog is hard to listen to and the characters are boring. The voice acting took me a minute to get used to, but once I did, I found it well acted and I liked his range of different voices.

Superb.

This is an outstanding story! Characters that you love and despise, packed with humor, emotion, action and gore. Loaded with technical details as well as putting humorous and unique twists on classic character types. This book is a must for anyone who enjoys fantasy.

absolutely amazing

I loved this book from start to finish. I don't agree with the author's blatant political views, but it's still so great.

Great read but too much gun talk

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It was exciting, packed full of action and adventure with a realistic feel to it.

What did you like best about this story?

It was realistic and fun

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

Any additional comments?

There was way too much detail on the weapons. You could skip forward a couple of minutes and it would still be detailing the gun. A little too much for me.
More story, less gun talk.

Good novel that I, personally, didn't care for

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes, because it was a fine example of an urban fantasy novel. But there was one major problem I had with it. Like a lot of novels in the genre, MHI has a "hidden world" setting, but the way the author justified it really broke my suspension of disbelief. Apparently all the monsters are kept secret because congress passed a law and now Federal agents roam around threatening anyone who tries to tell the public. Of course, that's merely a justification for the main character not knowing about monsters before being attacked by one. Still, if you notice how off it is the first time, it's not something the novel will ever let forget.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I found the early monster fights against weaker monsters the most interesting. The blend of firepower and wits in them is the book's greatest strength. The most tiresome part of the novel is the conflict between the federal agents and the monster hunters. Both sides come across as incompetent jerks and I don't see any reason for Monster Hunter International to be better monster hunters than the feds. I've stories where the heroes work for the government, freelance or without getting paid at all, why the author trying to make one group better than the other? It's a fictional profession in the first place.

What about Oliver Wyman’s performance did you like?

I liked how well his voice fit the main character and how well he did female voices.

Could you see Monster Hunter International being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Not really. As another reviewer mentioned it is Buffy with a conservative undertone. Not much of a hook for adaption.

Great Story, Good Performance

The only issue was the narrator, only because I had a different voice in my head. I love the series and I've read most of it numerous times so I had different sounding characters on my head, but overall Oliver did a good job and I still love the book. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a monster story with a twist on the classics.

Literary junk food of the highest order.

What did you love best about Monster Hunter International?

Let me first say that if you want high fiction, look elsewhere. This story is FUN. It's interesting, it possesses some plot twists, but ultimately it is an action-packed, good-guys-win-bad-guys-lose adventure.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The story made me bark out laughter several times. Pitt can be a wise-ass, and in keeping with the mostly light, fun story, the bad guys get what's coming to them. I got a warm fuzzy feeling when Pitt threw Grant Jefferson off the ship, and I might have even said,"Ha, the prick deserved it" out loud.

Any additional comments?

If you like guns, explosions, guns, violence, guns, and an easily accessible love story with likeable characters and guns, this one is for you.

Monster Hunting At It's Best

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I was skeptical when I got the book, but to my surprise I really enjoyed it.

What did you like best about this story?

The main character takes a lickin and keeps on tickin

What about Oliver Wyman’s performance did you like?

Wyman was able to switch characters seamlessly and does voices well.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed many times and really enjoyed the writers sense of humour.

Any additional comments?

A bit juvenile in places, I wonder who the writer’s target audience is.

just my type of book

I really enjoyed this book, however the narrator, was amazing at doing voices but mispronounced some of the gun terms. I would consider myself a gun guy, and when I hear him mispronounce saiga it makes me cringe. there was a few other mispronunciations but compared to other books it wasn't that bad. he mispronounced wendigo as well. This narrator was amazing at doing accents and voices. And I've already started the second book which is a testament and itself, and he's amazing at an English accent. The plot was awesome definitely well-thought-out and like I said I've already started the second book. try this book out!
