Publisher's summary

Every advanced society in the galaxy relies on the technology of the Protheans, an ancient species that vanished 50,000 years ago. After discovering a cache of Prothean technology on Mars in 2148, humanity is spreading to the stars---the newest interstellar species, struggling to carve out its place in the greater galactic community.

On the edge of colonized space, ship commander and Alliance war hero David Anderson investigates the remains of a top secret military research station---smoking ruins littered with bodies and unanswered questions. Who attacked this post, and for what purpose? And where is Kahlee Sanders, the young scientist who mysteriously vanished from the base hours before her colleagues were slaughtered?

Sanders is now the prime suspect, but finding her creates more problems for Anderson than it solves. Partnered with a rogue alien agent he can't trust, and pursued by an assassin he can't escape, Anderson battles impossible odds on uncharted worlds to uncover a sinister conspiracy...one he won't live to tell about. Or so the enemy thinks.

Great Start to an awesome Epic

Great to hear the back story to Anderson's part interaction with Saren mentioned in ME1.

GREAT STUFF! GREAT NARRATION!

Good Backstory for the Games

If you're a fan of the games and want more, then this book is for you. If you are unfamiliar with the games or have no interest then I would give this book a pass. There's really nothing here for someone not into the lore.

Fun and short

I am a big fan of the games. The story was a little short but nonetheless entertaining. I was interested to learn kind of the origins of Saren.

A must read for Mass Effect fans

A definite read for ME fans. It touches upon and explains a nice bit of lore about the events leading up to ME1. The reader did an ok job but could have been better. In fact I would have loved for Keith David to narrate since he was the voice for David Anderson in the games but overall I enjoyed it a lot.

Mass Effect Review

This book tells the story prior to the hit game Mass Effect. It expands and explains alot of the backstory behind how the events before the game transpires. There were a few instances where the narrator says things one way and the games say or explain it slightly different but it doesn't really detract from the story.

Enhances the enjoyment of the games substantially

This book exposes a lot of back story for Saren and Anderson. It make great strides in making the video games feel weighty. Saren's fall into madness in Mass Effect 1 means much more now that you know what he was like before he discovered Sovereign. The book also humanized Anderson, and that makes him even more likable.

As far as the narrator goes, he is pretty damn great. His female voices are surprisingly good.

Good not great

I’ve mostly listened to Star Wars audiobooks. Compared to those this narrator is a bit boring. But the book is serious and military style so it matches. I just like more animated readings and possibly sound effects.

Solid Prequel to ME1

Great context leading into a fresh Legendary Edition playthrough.

Can’t speak to it as a stand-alone. Lots of vague foreshadowing if separated from the games.

Plot Good but Characters Lack Depth

The story was interesting but, while some of the characters had backstory and motivations explained, others. didn't.

Good solid story

This is the back story to David Anderson, when he was younger and in his prime. Being denied to becoming the first human Spector. This also touches into Saren and the events leading up to Mass effect 1
