Publisher's summary

Butch O'Neal is a fighter by nature. A hard-living ex-homicide cop, he's the only human ever to be allowed in the inner circle of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world - to engage in the turf war with the lessers. His heart belongs to a female vampire, Marissa, an aristocratic beauty who's way out of his league. And if he can't have her, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers.

But fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, he's found by a miracle, and the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back, though even her love may not be enough to save him.

Mostly fantastic with a small side of ick

Let me start off by saying that I love this series. I’ve listened to all except for the most recent book and am currently on my second go around of it. I really enjoy Butch and feel it was smart to have a human being a part of the brotherhood as it gives a different angle on things. My only real qualm is that the way Butch talks to Marissa, especially during anything sexual is so skeevy. I dunno exactly what it is but I just found Butch’s sexy talk to be totally slimy and more like he was speaking down to a child than to a grown ass 300 year old woman. I get that Marissa is supposed to be very naive due to having been sheltered within the aristocracy, so he approaches her in that manner. Still...rubs me the wrong way. I also struggled with just how next level clueless Ward chose to write Marissa. I mean c’mon...a THREE HUNDRED year old female who has access to all of the same technology and easily tapped information and she didn’t know even the most absolutely basic things re sex. Meh....it’s a vampire, romance, fantasy book so I probably should expect a certain level of silly. I do have to say though that the BDB series is written EXTREMELY well for books in this category. The characters are well fleshed out and Ward really succeeds in making us care about what happens to her characters. If you like the rest of the series you will likely find this very much worth the credit and time!

Loved it!

I absolutely love the world that J.R. Ward has created with the Black Dagger brotherhood series! Ward takes broken males and females and developes a fabulous love story all while dealing with the battle of the lessers, the glymera, and socities expectations. Lover Revealed is Butch and Marissa's tale. Their road is as rocky as the other love matches earlier in the series. Marissa's growth into a strong balanced female is not an easy passage and Butch's recount of his life will cause your heart to go into empathetic spasms. John's (a.k.a. Darius) transition into a life without Wellsie & Tohr is a side story that you won't want to miss.

Lover Revealed

Loved this book. Hot and steamy love scenes. Very graphic killing scenes. If this does not bother you then I would recommend this series.

Good but...

Lead lady was a little annoying and I found it hard to listen to her whine, but made it through.

Butch's story

Butch O'Neal has been accepted as a friend and confidant to the Black Dagger Brotherhood, but is still on the outer fringes since he is a human and cannot fight with them. He is not fully accepted by the vampires and definitely not accepted by his human family. Butch is also in love with beautiful vampire Marissa. But Marissa is part of the vampire aristocracy and Butch knows a mere human would never be good enough for her. When Butch is captured by the Lessening Society, he is nearly killed. Rescued by Vishous, Butch knows an evil has been planted inside of him...an evil that may bring down the brotherhood.

This is another excellent story in Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Both Butch and Marissa are very lonely people, neither are satisfied with their current roles in life. Butch feels like an outsider in the vampire society, while Marissa is treated like a porcelain doll who must always bend to the rules of society. I loved their story and think they are a terrific couple. My rating: 5 Stars.

2023 Re-read: This time around, I'm listening to the audiobook. It took me a while to warm up to Marissa. She comes from the vampire aristocracy where her only job is to look pretty and do as her brother tells her. Thankfully, she learns what she wants to do with her life as she falls in love with Butch. This is still a 5-Star book for me.
