Publisher's summary

Acclaimed novelist Tom De Haven recreates the early years of the Man of Steel - the world's most popular and enduring superhero.

Opening with the young Clark Kent on a date, the novel takes an entirely fresh approach to the emergence of his superpowers and the start of his newspaper career, following him from rural 1930s Kansas across America to Hollywood in its golden age and then to New York City. He meets a worldly Lois Lane and conniving political boss Lex Luthor, and begins his battles against criminal masterminds, mad scientists, and super villains inspired by fascists.

This fun and fast-paced novel of thrilling invention, heroic escapes, ill-fitting costumes, and super-sized, coming-of-age angst is sure to appeal to devoted fans.

great take on the story

I really enjoyed how the story captures how the time period that superman came out is a huge part of the reason he became an iconic character. the conflicts that Clark experiences and the character of Lois are a direct result of the 30's.

Retro Superman Tale

Though parts of the story are a bit dragged out, the overall premise of the story fleshes out the origins of the 1930s Superman that fit well into the old Fleischer cartoons.

It's reads more for mature audiences but it delves into what makes Clark Kent tick and how he develops the persona of Superman. Part mystery, part science fiction, part American history, this is a good yarn for almoat any fan of Superman.

loved it!

I hope this is the first of more to come. I enjoyed the 1930's setting, and retelling of a classic comic character.

Astounding!

A truly wonderful take on a set of characters that we all know. This is not a standard superman, amazingly and wonderfully human set in the 30s.

A Superman story to touch your heart

A beautiful Elseworlds story written for literate adults about the dual paths of Clark Kent and Lane and many other depression-era everyday heroes who, as we all should, do the best they can. We also see the development of the villain Lex Luthor (a sociopath, who nonetheless hates racist remarks and smoking) as a counterpoint to Clark’s own journey. I wish Tom De Haven had written a sequel to this beautiful book, which is read well by Scott Brick.

Fantastic interpretation.

I love this book. Very human take on Superman. Sometimes a little slow, but stick with it. Scott brick is amazing as always.

It's Superman!

Be forewarned: This is not written with the same continuity or sensibilities of any recent Superman movie or comic. The team of Tom De Haven and Scott Brick have made the Superman story new again with a creditable feel for the time and culture of America in the mid-1930's. Sometimes naive, sometimes rather violent (this is not for younger listeners), the story is told with style, sympathy and grace. De Haven writes this book in third person-present tense which places the listener in an unusual relationship to the story. Scott Brick handles regional accents and makes distinctions between male and female characters effortlessly. His phrasing as the omniscient narrator smacks of newsreel and radio announcers. This book is different and all the more interesting and enjoyable for it.

Good not Great

What did you like best about It's Superman!? What did you like least?

Coming from a big superman fan, the story is well written. I own a version on CD and now this one.
Unfortunately my CD version has actors and music which was awesome, but this one is simply a man reading it. It was a let down but maybe I had too much hope from my previous experience.

How could the performance have been better?

Adding actors, sound effects and music made a different version of this story unforgettable. I wish I could find that version through Audible.com.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes, it is a great start to having fun with "RE-imagining" the story of Superman.
