Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Admiral John "Black Jack" Geary earned his rank after being revived from cryogenic sleep to lead the Alliance to victory against the Syndicate Worlds. But his superiors question his loyalty to the regime. Now in command of the First Fleet, Geary is tasked with exploring the frontier beyond Syndic space, a mission he fears deliberately puts the fleet - and himself - in harm's way.

An encounter with the alien enigmas confirms Geary's fears. Attacked without warning, he orders the fleet to jump star systems - only to enter the crosshairs of another hostile alien armada. Ignoring all of the First Fleet's attempts to communicate peaceful intentions, this system's species sends its ships into battle on suicide runs while it guards the exiting jump point with a fortress of incalculable power.

Now, with a faction of his officers determined to eliminate this new threat at any cost, Geary must figure out how to breach the enemy's defenses so the fleet can reach the jump point without massive casualties - even though the enigmas could be waiting on the other side.

Another "To Be Continued" book in the series

Would you listen to Invincible: The Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier, Book 2 again? Why?

Not by itself. You have to start from Book 1 if you ever want to read this series again because each book is completely incapable of standing alone. As a series, I might.

What did you like best about this story?

If I was reading this as a book, I think I'd get bored and stop reading because the story is pretty slow. However, as an audio book, it's a pretty non-offensive (aka nothing to get excited about either way) and plods along at a pace that allows me to do other things while I listen.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

As with the first book, what really bothers me about this book is that there is no resolution of anything by the end of the book. It simply ends, almost mid-sentence. You might as well tack "To Be Continued" onto the end. It's feels annoying like they took a finished story and intentionally broke it up into unfinished pieces just to get readers to spend more money buying what is essentially one book.

Excellent!

Another great novel in the Lost Fleet universe!

It has the known structure of well-written fleet engagements but I found myself continually surprised how the author finds entirely new things (e.g. the new aliens) to explore. I'm confused by the reviewers who call it formulaic when I found it anything but.

I love how the aliens all think differently, with distinct cultures -- and then act consistently within that culture. I'm pleased to say that I figured out the DT and it was highly amusing.

Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Great

I love all of these books. If you like sci-fi that tries it's best to be realistic I recommend these novels.

The lost fleet has found another winner.

The Blackjack Geary storyline continues with this latest book in the series, following the fleet past the extreme boundaries of Syndic Space and into the unknown. All in all, great story, great characters, brilliant conflict, and intense pace. The performance doesn't lack one bit.

Buy this series if you need a new escape.

Another great book in the series!

What did you like best about this story?

This series is great in its realistic depiction of tactics and movement in space and that really brings the story to life for me. Add in the political intrigue and realistic characters and that adds up to a series that I've recommended a number of times to friends, and this book in the series doesn't disappoint.

What about Christian Rummel’s performance did you like?

As always, the reader did a wonderful job on this. The reason I didn't give it five stars however was due to editing. A few times there's an odd distortion before it kicks back to regular. Not enough to really detract from the story, but it is noticeable.

Back to friendly space

Any additional comments?

This second book finishes the mission started in Dreadnaught, getting the fleet back out of alien space. I particularly like how the non-humans are portrayed as completely different and not at all human like.

I also appreciate how Jack Campbell has spent some time dealing with the inevitable communication issues between to completely different species. Why is it that in most other books the 'Aliens' simply speak English? Or at the very least already have the technology to translate themselves?

There are still some very nice space battles, but there seems to be more effort put into diplomacy and solving personal issues within the fleet.

Another solid ‘Black Jack’ book, if you liked the first one in this spin off you'll like this one.

good book

good books but one draw back is all of the filler by restating what was said in the previous books.
I thought this is a series not individual books.
