Needs a female reader

Normally I don't care who's reading a book but this is a medieval time period book and clearly the reader does not read female voices well. His cadence is way off for how a female would speak. it renders the story a little flat.

Stirring tale of Gwynedd intrigue

Would you listen to In the King's Service again? Why?

Yes. It has a complex plot, and it helps to understand as much as you can.

What was one of the most memorable moments of In the King's Service?

I won't write any spoilers, but one of the key revelations occurs only a few chapters into the book. It was a time bomb I didn't expect. Really disappointed me about one of the characters, but you can't change that.

Which character – as performed by Nick Sullivan – was your favorite?

Prince Brion.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me nervous. It read almost like a mystery at some points.

Any additional comments?

The narrator seemed to be too sarcastic at points. This might be okay for some evil characters, but it doesn't suit the whole cast.

many years since I started the Kurtz Deneryi series of books. Story works, but...

Nick Sullivan's narration is competent, well enunciated and paced, and puts me to sleep. Will not be purchasing and further of these audiobooks.

Good background. The end is better than the beginning

This book is obviously the background for the rest of the trilogy, so the story is not as engaging as I expected, especially in the first half of the book. However, it does fill in some background on characters and it does get better in the later portion of the book. The reader is not very appropriate for the first two thirds of the book as he doesn’t do female voices well as the early story focuses on women. Even with the male characters I would like more difference between characters. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the trilogy.

Skip the 1st half of the book

Really struggle to get through the 1st half of the book. Way too much dialog found myself daydreaming while I was listening to it.
