Publisher's summary

Honor Harrington has survived ship-to-ship combat, assassins, political vendettas, and duels. But this time, Honor and her crew, ambushed and captured, are aboard an enemy ship, bound for a prison planet aptly named "Hell" - and her scheduled execution.

Yet the one lesson Honor has never learned is how to give up. She and her people are going home - even if it means conquering hell to get there!

A Note from Author David Weber
There's been some confusion—not to say, um, energetic debate, readers and fans being readers and fans—about the correct pronunciation of "Manticoran." The truth, alas, is that a stitch was dropped. An error occurred. A mistake was made… and it wasn't Audible's fault. It was mine. Before Audible recorded the very first Honor Harrington book, narrator Allyson Johnson and I not only corresponded by e-mail but actually spoke to one another by phone. She wanted to make absolutely certain she had the correct pronunciations for names, places, star nations, etc., and I tried to make certain all of her questions were answered. And so they were. Unfortunately, at some point in the process, I replied to one of her e-mails by telling her that "Man-ti-core-ahn" was pronounced "Man-tik-er-ahn." Exactly how this happened is more than I can say at this point, except to blushingly disclose that the original e-mail remains intact, confirming to all the world that it was, indeed, my fault. I can ascribe it only to a temporary mental hiccup on my part and crave your forgiveness. If, however, you must blame someone for the mix-up, that someone should be me and not Audible, who have done everything they could to get it right.

Listen to another Honor Harrington adventure.

Computer/Network Attacks were painful!

As a network consultant, I found the computer warfare descriptions to frequently twig me - painful mix of accurate/inaccurate & often oversimplified descriptions of technology Weber was deriving those plot scenes from.

Yawn

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Get rid of the first half of the book.

Would you ever listen to anything by David Weber again?

Sure.

Did Allyson Johnson do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

The first HALF of this story was complete fluff. Only one important point was made, besides that, it can be summarized in two sentences, but I won't spoil it for you, please, feel my pain.

Good adventure but not really possible

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Kill Honor Harrington!
Or at least inprison the group on Hell. Let them be liberated years later by the Republic of Haven.

Even though it turned out to be an enjoyable adventure, there is no believable way that they should have escaped from the Tepes. Slight spoiler, there is no way that State Security would give a turncoat access to the computer system. I can defend this statement ad nauseum, but it would be way too technical and boring. To sum up quickly, It is hard for native born, and loyal people to pass background checks, and then get sworn in on computer systems in the real world. Therefore I have issue that a foriegn born former belligerant would get access to the computer system. In addition to that, it is impossible to fathom that the SS (who sure are Nazi like) would give Horace Harkness access to the computer, without first checking his loyalty by having him put a pulsar dart through a Manticoran's head.

It is time to kill Honor Harrington, because she is about as interesting as Superman.

Her superhuman acheivements and abilities make her boring now. She is:

The best in Martial Arts in the Galaxy
The best in Swordmanship in the Galaxy
Steadholder and Peer of the Realm on two seperate Planets (how is that even possible?)
in the military of two separate systems (how is that possible?)
The best military tactitian in the Galaxy
Can drink copious amounts of Coco without ill effects
Is plainlooking, yet somehow massively attractive, more so than anyone else in the Galaxy
Is never wrong
Has served over 40 years in the military, even with prolong, who would ever want that?
Is wealthy beyond belief. And yet is still in the military. Millionaires don't stay in the military, period.
Is apparently in love with a really old guy, that is at worst WTF, and at best Eeew!

In short, overcapable is completely boring.

Also, I hate Treecats nearly as much as I hate Ewoks. Both species need to eradicated.

too much internal monolog...

Every time I heard manta-kor-in pronounced man-tick-er-in I cringed.Tons of internal personal analysis that just made a decent story drag on and on, making me desperate for story development.

I give up

Sorry but the series is pretty good but I kept trying to get used to the narrator but finally, I gave up. That I made it this far- through 7 books- is perhaps a testament to the storyline but I have never before so hated a narrator than this woman. People pay their money to be entertained, not distracted. She sounds as if she's reading a news story and she never seems to care about that which she is reading. I've been an Audible member for over 10 years and have listened to hundreds of books but this is the first time I've been so nauseated by a reader. I've heard other books by her and she was fine, but in this series actually makes me angry. lol.

Too many words and too little to say

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Fans of the series will find the book a continuation of the plot and an additional development of the character of Honor Harrington.

What was most disappointing about David Weber’s story?

Please God find an editor. Long wordy descriptions of everything even if they are not germane to the plot get old very quickly in this book.

What three words best describe Allyson Johnson’s performance?

Her performance was the best part of the book.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment, the outline is good and the plot is more complex than many of the early books but the pacing was awful.

Worst shlock

In the first 8 chapters nothing happens. We get treated to character descriptions ad nauseum over and over again. No plot, no nothing. I would be ashamed to be the publisher of this.
There are nothing but descriptive adjectives and adverbs, and sentences beginning with little phrases like "not because, but in fact" , all geared towards an incredibly wordy but meaningless...but I digress. Don't buy this unless you enjoy being very, very bored. I did stop at 8 chapters, which was 7 too many.

Too long, but good overall

I really enjoy this series, and Allyson Johnson does a great job narrating. I have to say that this book is way too long. The first 8 or so chapters probably could have been reduced to about 2. Sometimes, while listening, there would be so much internal dialog that I'd forget what was happening. The ending was good and I'm going to start the next book in the series.

Incredibley horrible

I dare you to get through this verbal piece of crape! If one can rejoice in a writer that drones on and on about technicalities that lull you into a catatonic state then you have found your author...... enjoy....... and the narrator is like shards of glass in the ears! Horrible
