Publisher's summary

Warning: Not fit for human consumption

This book contains foul language and fouler descriptions of life as a zombie. It will offend most anyone, so proceed with caution or not at all. And be forewarned: This is not a zombie book. This is a different sort of tale. It is a story about the unfortunate, about those who did not get away. It is a human story at its rotten heart. It is the reason we can't stop obsessing about these creatures, in whom we see all too much of ourselves.

Compelling, but not for the Faint Hearted

What made the experience of listening to I, Zombie the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed the many different narrators for the different personalities in the story -- Not confusing at all. Actually, it would have been confusing if it was all narrated by one person

What was one of the most memorable moments of I, Zombie?

Hard to say.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Not sure

Any additional comments?

I found the idea inrtiguing and the stories oddly compelling. The individuals certainly speak with different "voices." I applaud the author on making the individuals realistic.

Kind of made me feel sick..

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

Excellent variety by the narrators, they all did an excellent job.

Any additional comments?

This book made me feel kind of sick, which I think was the intention. It goes a long way to describing the different mental results of the characters as they're taken along for the ride as a zombie prisoner.
I was especially creeped out by the older woman who enjoyed being a zombie because she was no longer frail.

Really good and very different zombie story

This was very very well done - It is only the second book I have read where the POV is from the Zombie side, and it is extremely well done. You feel sorry for them, and are mad at them, all at the same time.

Only drawback in my opinion is that it ends too soon, and isn't really resolved (unlike human protagonists, there is never really an end to zombiehood, so this lack of resolution is also reflective of the nature of the story). This might not even be a drawback... if someone is disappointed in the fact that a book ends because they want to read more, that pretty much makes it an excellent read, huh.

It was an excellent read. Narration is terrific - different voices for different characters. I have already read some of Howey's works (Shift), and this is much much better than I expected.

Didn’t go anywhere

The book is an interesting premise of the zombie tale, told from the standpoint of zombies, but it’s a series of short stories. Essentially it doesn’t really go anywhere.

Not very interesting

This is a collection of short stories about people whi have already become zombies and even though they still think inside they cannot control their actions. Unfortunately the short stories are all a little too uninteresting for me to give it a good review.

Boring

I almost made it 2 hours. Way too boring to finish. Interesting twist to zombies but you can just have a good idea without a story. I’m fine with guts and gore but when book is nothing but describing it , it looses its appeal. Also the narrators were giving terrible direction. When every word every sentence is read super dramatically it looses its impact. Do not waste your time or money with this book!

Confused and frustrated

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

What would make this book a 4 or 5 star listen would be if there was a actual story. These are short incomplete stories about a zombie's perspective. I listened to half the book then became so bored and frustrated I quit. None of the stories are interesting.

Note: I only listened to half the book. Perhaps the end is good or the stories all tie in.....I have no idea.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No!

More gore than I can handle.

I love Hugh Howey and a good zombie novel, but for me this was too gory. A different kind of zombie novel, told by those trapped in the bodies of the dead. Much of the story was very repetitive- a lot of shuffling and moaning while thinking of the past. Story never really moved forward. Narration was good.
