Publisher's summary

The first novel in the Iron Druid Chronicles - introducing a cool, new, funny urban fantasy hero

Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old - when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer.

Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries. Now the determined deity has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power - plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, his vampire and werewolf team of attorneys, a bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good old-fashioned luck of the Irish - to kick some Celtic arse and deliver himself from evil.

Don’t miss any of Kevin Hearne’s phenomenal Iron Druid Chronicles novels:

Light hearted entertainment

The story is amusing and clever. The narration adds to overall quality. The plot was complex enough to hold my interest but was not heavy.

Atticus the Druid is a Great Guy

Any additional comments?

Atticus is a 2000 year old Druid, but if you met him on the street you would think he is 21. He takes good care of himself. He owns and operates the Third Eye Bookstore while in hiding from some really bad enemies. His companion is his Wolf Hound dog, Oberon. Atticus and Oberon can talk to one another mentally and they are hilarious. They love one another intensely and there is much conversation. The reader does a masterful job with Oberon's voice. You would know the character is a dog even if the story did not reveal that fact. Oberon sees the world very simply - all he wants besides Atticus's love is sausage. And, oh yeah, a few French poodles (he has a weakness for French poodles).
Atticus is a powerful Druid with many magical powers. He draws his power from the Earth and he is a protector of the Earth. He has a magical sword to help in his battles. In this first book, the original owner of the sword is determined to kill Atticus and reclaim the sword. Atticus does not know who to trust. Witches will betray a person in a heartbeat. Demons will kill him if they can. Werewolves and vampires can be friends, or not. This is just a fun read - witty and entertaining.

Loved it!

The performance was great. The character development performance and writing was good. The flow is what makes it work. It is fun loving and inquisitive. Enough detail to get along but not too much to drag down the pace.

I definitely plan to read the next book in the series. The main character is very likeable and I want to know what he gets into next. The supporting characters are also good. They are not charactures of personality types rather fairly grounded - even those within the super natural realm aren't too over the top.
