Publisher's summary

If society collapsed, could you survive?

When Morgan Carter's car breaks down 250 miles from his home, he figures his weekend plans are ruined. But things are about to get much, much worse: The country's power grid has collapsed. There is no electricity, no running water, no Internet, and no way to know when normalcy will be restored - if it ever will be.

An avid survivalist, Morgan takes to the road with his prepper pack on his back. During the grueling trek from Tallahassee to his home in Lake County, chaos threatens his every step but Morgan is hell-bent on getting home to his wife and daughters - and he'll do whatever it takes to make that happen.

Fans of James Wesley Rawles, William R. Forstchen's One Second After, and The End by G. Michael Hopf will revel in A. American's apocalyptic tale.

Whether we’re focused on the apocalypse or just an ill-timed breakdown on the side of a particularly remote road, there’s something about imagining survival scenarios that can be addictive. On some level, we all wonder if we would have what it takes to pit ourselves against the worst the world can possibly offer and make it out alive. That’s why it’s no surprise that survival literature is so popular, and that the stories in the genre are so diverse.

Great listen

My first audible book! Good listen, story line, production and voice acting. Couldn’t be happier. I’ll start the second in the series very soon!

Great story and character development, BUT....

I really liked the story and the characters were great, I think that's what keeps me coming back for the remaining novels. There are two areas I wish the author would improve on. 1st is his vocabulary and repetitiveness. Mr. American uses the same words or phrases in the same sentences or consecutive sentences over and over. The biggest annoyance is his use of the word "road" . I realize this is a story about walking home on the roads so obviously you're going to use that word a lot, but it is extremely excessive. For example, (and this is an exaggeration, but not by much) he would say, "I stepped out onto the road, brought my binoculars up and looked down the road, at the end of the road I saw a group of men standing on the road, I slowly walked down the side of the road, making sure that the people at the end of the road couldn't see me.... ". Or this one, which is a quote..." it had been a while since I had seen him, and it was good to see him". Really??? How someone who writes such a good story and amazing character development be lacking in the most basic vocabulary and syntax fundamentals blows my mind.
2nd - The last thing is something I've seen in a lot of reviews, which is he needs to cut back on the minutia. he goes into such incredible detail about how he makes his breakfast or does other menial every-day tasks. thanks, but i know how to make oatmea, you dont have to go through it step by step for two paragraphs...... other than that, really enjoyed the book.

Great story!

Great story with a good mix of harsh post apocalyptic tragedy and relief. Like a zombie apocalypse but more realistic

Awesome Storyline

A. American is a awesome author and a great survivalist. Between his books and his actions with Survival Dispatch Insider he is a great person to listen to and learn from.

I love these stories ....

I used to sell a brand of MRE to these types of men. I have to say a lot of what the author wrote feels so accurate and I love that. I think stories about sheepdogs and ex pats are more true then most of society realizes. But I love how plausible this story feels in many ways. It doesn't hurt to learn from these stories and remember some if not all of the lessons you can get from them. I got some good ones from this story. We all want to survive but how far we each will go to do that is what it comes down to. I think this was done really well and I applaud the author and narrator. Great job and thank you for getting me thru some work days.

Amazing series

I've read all the books, simply amazing, the voices change for a few characters from when first introduced to later in the audio. Also after reading all the books there a few mistakes but that's nitpicking, books are amazing!

Spotty Narration Timing

Stays true to the title. Point A to point B with all the trouble in between following a nationwide EMP effect. Starts on relatively easy mode in day one or two as people expect things to return to normal then the inevitable backslide into desperation and banditry. Still pockets of civilization and nicely realistic. There is a strong whiff of "Thanks Obama" without naming any names but there's no denying that the "current administation" - as the book identifies them - inspires these sorts of stories.

I actually like the narrator but a jarring flaw is the complete absence of any distinction when the narrator has jumped to a completely different/distant scene, especially in the second half when it is pretty much 3 separate stories being told at once. This strikes me as more a production failure than an artistic one, easily fixed with a brief audio cue or a pause-Character Name Here-pause whenever they jump scenes.

Sins forgiven, was as a satisfying story. No regrets.

Prediction of what's coming...or what's here.

I can't wait to work my way through this series. The narrator is great at painting a picture especially with his different voices. As for the premise...it's incredibly eerie considering what's happening in modern events. It feels like it's already happening. people need to wake up and see that this book could very well turn into an unintentional documentary. our country is at the brink of making this story a reality and authoritarianism is right around the corner. highly recommend this series...incredible.
