Now Shinn returns with a new novel set in the same world, where a troubled Warrior Rider named Wen faces her greatest challenge in the last place she ever expected: behind the walls of a great family estate known as Fortune, where Wen has been hired to guard the young heiress. Once there, she will find that fate has other plans for her.

"Plenty of action for a fun adventure" (Locus magazine)
I am an avid fan of Sharon Shinn, reading everything she writes. I am thrilled to see that some of her work has finally been produced for audio. I only hope that her novels of Samaria receive the same excellent treatment.
If you are yearning for some quality escapist, fantasy storytelling/ romance I highly recommend reading and/or listening to all of her novels. It is best to do The Twelve Houses in order.
I really hate when narrators change, since it disrupts my view of the characters, however generally is something easily overcome. In book 5, the narrator mis-pronounces the name of several key characters! You want to talk about impacting your read, every time a characters name is mis-pronounced, I find myself yelling at the book with the correct pronunciation. Do they not check with the author on pronunciation? It seems to really hurt the flow of a 5 book series. At least when the narrator changed from book 2 to 3, they narrator pronounce character names consistently with the first narrator.
Over all, all five books are good and I would purchase again, just be prepared for some issues with flow.
And I did not like the narrator. The story had moments of beauty and interest for me. I particularly enjoyed Wen and Jasper -- and found Jaspers voice to be the readers one stand out performance. The other voices mush together, and it was difficult to figure out at times what was going on. Very disappointing considering how great the first 4 Twelve Houses books were to listen to.
As disappointed as I was initially that this book did not feature the core 6 characters, I oddly found the parts of the book with Sennith and Taze, et al, to be the parts that dragged. Those chapters felt like an after-thought, whereas Wen and Jasper felt fleshed out and real.
I really do hope that any future books will not feature Lindsay Ellison as the reader. I think everyone deserves a second chance, of course, but NOT to ruin a Sharon Shinn novel.
This is the last of the books from this series. It focused on a new person rather than the 6 main people of the other books. I was sad to see this series end. It will be definately be a series I will listen to again in a year. Worth the credits. I hesitated getting into this series and now wish I had listened sooner.
I really liked the book, the plot, the characters, etc. It's as well written as Shinn's other novels, though it was a little anti-climatic after the fourth book. The major problem was Ellison's narration. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't as good as those that came before.
Hot romance/Sci Fi we're so lucky to have Audible to feed our book addictions. I love walking my precious dog Sydney & listening to my books
This was another excellent listen. Based around one character but the regulars are still there also in parts. Sharon Shinn has done an excellent job with the whole series. I have enjoyed each book more and more and just love all of the characters. Sad to have the series ended but will defiantly be readomg the books again. A truly delightful series.
This series is great. As an epic fantasy fan I greatly enjoyed the Twelve Houses. However, I am rating this particular audiobook. You can hear the narrator's subtle breathing at the end of every sentence like she's short of breath. It's very annoying. And I'm only using the standard Ipod earphones. But there's no choice but to endure the narration. Great series.
This story is very sweet and very exciting, Sharon Shinn is a masterful crafter of stories . This one may be her best . It is definitely my favorite !
A nicely realised world, likeable heroes and a satisfactory resolution. I think you could listen to this novel without having heard the others in a series, but if you enjoy it it's good to know there's four more. This is one of the pleasures of Audible, when you find new writers without having seen their books elsewhere.
