Publisher's summary

Here is the second entry in a new young-adult series by New York Times best seller David Weber and the prequel to the hugely popular Honor Harrington adult science-fiction saga.

Fire in the forest – and a cry for help from a trapped and desperate alien mother! Unfortunately, this is one cry no human can hear. Stephanie Harrington, precocious 14-year-old Provisional Forest Ranger on the planet Sphinx, knows something is wrong from the uneasy emotion that is flooding into her from her treecat friend, Climbs Quickly. But though Stephanie’s alien comrade shares a tight bond with his two-legs, whom he knows as Death Fang’s Bane, he cannot communicate directly to her the anguished call from one of his people. Still, their strong and direct bond of feeling may be enough. Stephanie and fellow ranger Karl Zivonik respond to Climbs Quickly’s rising waves of distress.

Fire season on the pioneer world of Sphinx has begun. But there are those who want to use the natural cycle of the planet for personal gain – and to get rid of the one obstacle that stands in the way of acquiring even greater land and power on Spinx: the native treecats.

Now it's up to Stephanie and Climbs Quickly, along with their friends, family, and allies, to prevent disaster and injustice from befalling a treecat clan. But in the process, Stephanie must be certain to preserve the greatest secret all. It is the knowledge that the treecats of Sphinx are not merely pets or servants, but are highly intelligent in their own right – that they are a species fully deserving of rights, respect, and freedom. And keeping the secret that will allow the treecats time to develop a mutually beneficial relationship with humankind all begins with the friendship of a girl and her treecat.

Headstrong

This is a great YA series. While this continues the tale of Stephanie and her treecat it also tracks the teen issues of growing up, finding boys, and resisting peer pressure. It is well all around.

Excellent Sequel

Good sequel to A Beautiful Friendship. The characters are likeable, some are rather predictable but it's a fun, light read.

Keeps your attention

The story really keeps your attention. I moved very quickly through this book. Looking forward to the next . Only criticism is that the author needs additional input about teenage girls thoughts… there were time in the previous book and in this one, where I could “hear” a male perspective on a “girls” thoughts… I see improvement regarding this area, which maybe the co author’s influence?
The performance is great!
The evolution of the tree-cat human relationship is something to which I am looking forward!

The region is ablaze, all beasts, & TreeCats flee

Our heroine is soft on the dashing son of a distinguished prof. The of Anthropologie who seeks to study TreeCat culture, are they clever beasts, or Sentient primatives, it could be argued. It's a drout year, uncommon, a cycle, and the year for a forest fire. It is a call for the human Colony to stand with the forest rangers in staunching fires, rescuing animals, & TreeCats fleeing the flames.
To get a leg up on studying the TreeCats the Prof. gets his son, & study team missing, & stranded close to a firefront. Dad, the Prof. freaks, his son takes the team in hand. Close, buy still clicks away from the Science team our heroine is rescuing TreeCats who are fleeing the fire. She sees the son she has her eye on, and the Scientist team clinbs in with the process TreeCats... Etc., & so fourth it goes.
This SciFi. Catches the ear, & carries you along.
A well done youth adventure, I'm 70 + years old, yet did enjoy.

A question: Listening I've wondered, Is this author "David Webster," another Silas Mariner? I haven't listened to the Honor series yet to compare it to the adult Sci. Fiction.
I did Read a number of the Honor novels back in the pre-Audable days; they may give a clue to my question when I listen to them.

About this story, "The Fire Season," be clear that this is The SECOND story, of three. Do begin listening with book one:
"A Remarkable Friendship."
The THIRD book, the book after this one will be:
"The TreeCat War." is, (I believe,) the last in this series of pre-Honor stories.

Good follow up on the previous novel.

Would you consider the audio edition of Fire Season to be better than the print version?

For me as a driver 10 hours on the road daily, yes.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Fire Season?

The rescue of the treecats.

Have you listened to any of Khristine Hvam’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. Good as always.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No.

Any additional comments?

Good relaxing read. It is a good series to introduce to a sci-fi entry level youth but also enjoyable for adults. As a general rule it is better to read the previous novels in a series if there are any. In this case only one was written before.

mox-nix the one the other it really dose not matter

What was one of the most memorable moments of Fire Season?

Recusing the sciencetists from the swamp.

Which scene was your favorite?

the adoption scene in the midst of the flames.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Any additional comments?

I like David's work I am still on the fence about this series though. I will admit though I am above his target audience though.
