Publisher's summary

WHO WILL HAVE THE LAST LAUGH?

Stop me if you’ve heard this one. A thief, a candlemaker, an ex-mercenary, and a pig farmer walk into a trap…and what happens to them is no joke. When Riyria is hired to retrieve a jester’s treasure, Royce and Hadrian must match wits with a dwarf who proves to be anything but a fool. Difficult choices will need to be made, and in the end those who laugh last do so because they are the only ones to survive.

This is a standalone short story of 7,200 words. No prior knowledge of The Riyria Revelations or The Riyria Chronicles is required to enjoy it to its fullest, making this a perfect introduction for new readers or a chance for Riyria veterans to spend a little more time with old friends. The Jester is a story of adventure, bonds of friendship, and a recognition that the choices we make dictates the future we find.

Good opening volume to an even better total

This opening to the four book set appealed to me but it is a much more lighthearted opening than the series as a whole, which gets increasingly intense until it resolves in the final volume (and thank heavens it DOES resolve, quite satisfactorily I thought).

Splendid short story

Very nice story, its structure a bit winding and unexpected. Would recommend it to any fantasy lover

How Dungeon Crawling Should Be

Fantastic story that shines further light on the infamous Riyria. Honestly, the reason I've bought the whole series, is because these shorts were free.

The Jester

loved the narrator, seeing the growth of the characters and relationships and the little lessons learned.

Nice !

A nice little short story with some meaning behind it. Nothing particularly special, but I enjoyed it all the same.

Interesting short story

Haven't heard of the Riyria Chronicles before this book, but if the rest if the series is written as well as this short story was, I will definitely be a treat. I think I'll give book one a go.
