Publisher's summary

Emily Baxter’s dream life turns into a waking nightmare the day the red rain falls. Like a biblical plague, the scarlet downpour spreads a hideous virus that demolishes life in New York City, the nation, and the world. Suddenly the last soul in an annihilated metropolis - and possibly on Earth - the onetime newspaper reporter must learn to scavenge, survive...and plan for a future of utter solitude.

Then, from far-flung Alaska, another living voice reaches out, and Emily grasps at her only glimmer of hope. But she may be even less alone than she thinks. The world is in the midst of a strange and frightening transition; something that fell with the red rain is remaking Earth in its own alien image.

Now, Emily alone will bear witness to the terrifying new evolution - and risk her life to outrun it, for the sake of the future and in the name of all that is human.

Book 1 is fine, Book 2 was just a rehash

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

A fun book, more color in the characters than Book 2. Book 2 is the SAME STORY rewritten. Poorly I might add. I returned Book 2 for a refund.

The Imagery Stuck with Me for Years

My favorite genre is post-apocalyptic fiction. I listened to this book several years ago. I don’t love the narrator and I don’t love the writing style, though not sure how much is the narrator and how much is the writing.

I finished the book with no intention of continuing the series. However, over the years, the imagery of the red trees/forest has stuck with me and I think about this book a lot. Which tells me that it’s a good book. The premise and plot details are unique, though there are gaping holes in the plausibility.

So... I’ve come back to this book. Just relistened to it and am about to listen to the next in the series.

If you are a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, this is a must for its uniqueness.

Good first book

This is an entertaining book. Slightly different take on the apocalyptic survival story.

The author does some over explaining and endorses some obscure products - this isn't too distracting though.

I recommend this to all who enjoy a good end of the world survival! The next few books are better than the first.

Ok story, less than ok reader

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably not. Just not good enough to recommend.

How could the performance have been better?

If the reader had decided to NOT attempt to cry like a baby when the crying baby appeared.

A bike? From New York to Alaska during the apocalypse?

Overall, I found it just average but riding a bicycle from New York to Alaska while alien creatures are taking over the planet is beyond the ability to suspend disbelief. You could tell a man wrote this as the planning and preparedness that the average woman does on a daily basis just in today’s world to be safe, there is NO way that she would head out on a bicycle. She doesn’t know how to drive? Well, the time to learn has come! There are a lot of other times that just made me gawk in astonishment at some of Ems internal dialogues. Anyway, it’s okay but definitely not great .

If you think of it as a comedy it’s not bad.

I honestly find the MC to be annoying and while she may be relatable or realistic in a situation like this I can’t stand her. I find myself rolling my eyes more often than not wondering when she’s going to suck it up. As a journalist just how sheltered is she? I suppose that depends on what she was reporting on but I don’t know. Some reviewers say her quirks give her more character but I find it just adds to her shallow 2D character type. The story premise is fascinating and I find myself wishing it had been centered around anyone who’d actually seen a survival movie or two. Spoilers: Learn to drive and take the bike! You can have both! The best thing about this story is the dog.

Thoroughly refreshing.

There are 3 books in the extinction point series, and they are all excellent. Action-packed, fantastically narrated, well-developed characters. This series tells the stories of survivors of an alien viral attack that wipes out most of the human race. It is extremely refreshing to read a post-appocalypse tale in which the survivors work together to save the human race. Usually, they start fighting one another, or some psycho goes off on a power trip. If we ever do have an appocalypse, I hope we behave the way these survivors do. Emily Baxter is one tough lady. I love a strong female character, instead of some macho "good ol' boy" type. Emily Beresford is the perfect narrator for this series.

worth the listen

The story was good, at times a little too much unnecessary details. The narrative was ok, but a little bland at times. I liked the book better.
