Publisher's summary

Emily Baxter’s dream life turns into a waking nightmare the day the red rain falls. Like a biblical plague, the scarlet downpour spreads a hideous virus that demolishes life in New York City, the nation, and the world. Suddenly the last soul in an annihilated metropolis - and possibly on Earth - the onetime newspaper reporter must learn to scavenge, survive...and plan for a future of utter solitude.

Then, from far-flung Alaska, another living voice reaches out, and Emily grasps at her only glimmer of hope. But she may be even less alone than she thinks. The world is in the midst of a strange and frightening transition; something that fell with the red rain is remaking Earth in its own alien image.

Now, Emily alone will bear witness to the terrifying new evolution - and risk her life to outrun it, for the sake of the future and in the name of all that is human.

Good book if you get it on sale.

Although the book is somewhat interesting it is extremely light reading (listening). It is much too short for the type of content. I liked it enough to get the next book though... If you like this type of subject it's worth listening to if you can get it for 5$ or less.

Oh My Wow!

This is the best science fiction I've read in a long time. I ended up getting the narration from Audible because I didn't want to stop reading when I went to work ( depending on what I'm doing I can listen while I work). So getting the next one! I want to see what happens next to Emily. Paul's delivery of this story has you hanging on every page, and every word. What takes over is not your normal SciFi thriller.

Not a complete Story

First off let me say that “Extinction Point” is well written and interesting. The premise is great and I really like the overall idea of the story, but there are two problems with it that really made it hard to get into it. First is the main character Emily, she just doesn’t seem to get it. From the start she seems to make poor choice after poor choice. Dead police officer I’m not going to grab his gun. Why ride cross country in a car (even at 10-15 miles an hour until you get the hang of driving) when you can get a bike. Also I’m going to carry gallons and gallons of water rather than a water purifier. Those are just some of the larger poor choices she makes, but from start to finish I was pretty annoyed with her. Second is that the story isn’t complete. Nothing is really resolved and we don’t really find out what is going on. I think the entire story will be pretty good you definitely have to commit to more than one book which is one of my pet peeves. Overall interesting but 2.5 stars for me if I’m looking at just this book on its own.

Mrs. Beresford does a good job with the narration, but she's a bit level and slow at times when there is a lot of action and excitement where the pace should speed up a bit.

Other reviewers are missing the point of the genre

Why are all the other reviewers hating on this book so much? I really enjoyed this book. I suspect that those who did not, are not fans of horror/suspense in general. Critics often make the same mistake when reviewing horror/suspense movies... they cry about how weak the characters and plot were, which immediately proves that they don't understand the point of this genre. The point of the horror/suspense genre is to feel the emotions of horror and suspense while you are reading, and this book does both very well!

I started listening to this book without any expectations. I hadn't read any reviews, and I was generally excited about the end-of-the-world theme. After listening for a few chapters, I was really getting into it. There are some very disturbing moments, especially in the first half of the book. I was enjoying it so much, in fact, that I was curious as to what other readers thought of it. Then I saw the other reviews. Summary: they don't like the main character, therefore they hate the book.

I will agree that Emily is not an amazing protagonist. She's not that interesting, and often thinks and says things that I would not have thought or said in the same situation. She's not a hero. She's basically your girlfriend or wife in a survival scenario. Clueless, making all kinds of mistakes, but she at least she is trying her best, and you can respect her for that. That out of the way, she didn't really bother me that much.

What really grabbed me was the atmosphere that the author creates. At each stage, I was on the edge of my seat and kept guessing as to what would happen next. You slowly discover what is going on (contrary to what other reviewers have stated about the book having no explanations), and by the end of the book, you have a pretty good idea of what has happened. If you need the author to explicitly state what happened and why, you are (again) reading the wrong genre.

Overall, I enjoyed listening to it and will look forward to the sequel. If you like horror/suspense, and you like the feeling of dread and worry that you can only find in this genre, then don't let the other reviewers deter you. If you're looking for a great plot with deep character development, there's always Jane Eyre.

A Slow Burner Worth The Wait

First off, the narrating was awesome. I typically do not mind a "slow burner," as long as it pays off in other ways. The narration helped get me through some of the slower parts with her incredible vocal skills. Plus, the action and suspense scenes were great in their unpredictability. If but one of these had been lacking, I would have rated the Story Rating lower (but still in the mid to high 4's).

I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but this book was "different" for some reason. Perhaps it was the unusual aliens, the personality of the heroine, or maybe the fairly limited settings presented throughout the story. Definitely NOT a bad thing...just...different. In any event, I would be more than willing to continue the series based upon my experiences with this first book.

Well ……..I liked it.

I read this series some time ago and am enjoying it again. The other reviewers were tough! For myself, the story was refreshing the first time around and the second time. It starts with a rain born infection that kills most of the population. In New York a young woman survives. The horror of what NY and the people there become…….A voice on a phone urges her to take a quest to Alaska where the colder climate seems to keep the infection at bay. She begins her quest on a bike. I know other readers thought it stupid she could not drive but for a city dweller it is plausible. Once again I want to see where this goes. The narrator is good. I recommend readers 16 +.

OUTSTANDING Alien Invasion!!

Very entertaining!! I love this series. The narrator is good, the story is well done. Recently I’ve been running into a lot of boring ,poorly written, really bad narrated books. So this series is exciting from the beginning until the end, feels good to be listening to a book I don’t want to turn off.

Better Than Expected

The author did a great job with this story. The character is very likeable and the build up to the aliens was good. Can't wait for the next book.

Good plot, too much exposition

The plot is intriguing and made me want to continue, in spite of the fact that there were many times I couldn't stand the whiny protagonist. There is also way too much time spent in her head. If I had been reading instead of listening, I would have skipped over all that naval gazing she does. This would be a 5 star novel if the author or his editor had pruned all that. That said, the plot has snagged me and I'm going on to the second novel in this series.
