    Story
"Inspired by those who came before."
Would you listen to Eragon - Part One again? Why?

I quite enjoyed the story and loved the narration by Gerrard Doyle.

What did you like best about this story?

Sooooo much better than the movie. A good start to what appears to be a great Fantasy series.

Which character – as performed by Gerrard Doyle – was your favorite?

Loved the portrayal of Brom, loved the character in the movie as portrayed by Jeremy Irons (a most underutilised actor) and it was great to see him fleshed out in the book and greatly portrayed by Gerrard.

    Any additional comments?

The story and so many things in this book are obviously inspired by Tolkiens' works, but done with a obvious love of the original source and with just the right spin to make it his own world, an incredible feat for any author let alone a 16 year old novice (I believe that's how old Mr Paolini was when he finished Eragon).I look forward to sharing this book with my children as they grow older as it is a fine addition to anyone who loves Dragons and the bond they can have with their riders.

I wonder if Anne McCaffrey ever read Eragon?

"Eragon - a favourite story comes to life"
Would you listen to Eragon - Part One again? Why?

Yes, this is an audio book I will listen to over and over again as well loved characters come to life. Gerrard Doyle has a beautiful voice and the life he instills in his characters makes thems so much more real - and there are quite a few.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed how you share Eragons journey from simple farm boy to Dragon Rider and I love Saphira's development and the sense of humour and possessiveness she has for Eragon. The whole world that you are introduced to, the magic, elves, dwarfs, dragons and intrigues are thoroughly enjoyable.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The scene where Saphira and Eragon drink too much mead and Saphira belches a huge flame before passing out

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Come and experience the re-birth of a legend and one man's journey from innocent farm boy to fierce Dragon Rider

    Any additional comments?

The movie that was made would have been a huge success if the film makers had stayed true to the characters in the book. It's the reason the Harry Potter and Twilight transition from book to film was so successful - the films stayed true to the characters and story lines whereas with Eragon the characters in the film had, at best, only a vague resemblance to the detailed descriptions of the characters in the book (& Arya looked nothing like her description in the book) and, if you had not read the books, the film made no sense at all

"Why split the book into two?"

I enjoyed the book, but why split it into two? I have read plenty of books longer than this that are not split at a place where you have to buy the second half. Is this a money spinner audible?

"Great start - shame they split the book in two !"
Would you listen to Eragon: The Inheritance Cycle, Book 1 - Part 1 again? Why?

I think the story is engaging and it has elements that mean you could listen to it over and over.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Eragon the central character is growing and learning and does not get dull

What about Gerrard Doyle’s performance did you like?

Gerrad Doyle's performance overall is good; characters sound different and speech is clear.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

There is already a film to this book which I have seen before getting the audio book and so far they are very different, but I am enjoying it.

    Any additional comments?

I don't like the fact the books are split into two parts! There are longer books un-split!

    "Narrator fine"

I just wanted to comment with respect to Helen's review that I found the narrator to be fine. Perhaps he reminds her of someone she doesn't like! Yes, occasionally there is some petulence, but just as much there is wonder, innocence, excitement etc etc.
I bought this book in two parts as there doesn't appear to be any other option in the UK for the unabridged audio.

    "Excellent reading"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Enjoyed the story, Gerrard Doyle brought the story to life with his vocalisation of the characters. Just close your eyes and your there.

What other book might you compare Eragon: The Inheritance Cycle, Book 1 - Part 1 to, and why?

It stands on its own but also can stand beside lord of the ring 'fellowship of the ring' as the start of an epic story.

Have you listened to any of Gerrard Doyle’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Yes I have listened to all the inheritance series of books and enjoyed everyone of them.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    An epic story starts here.

    Any additional comments?

I would recommend everyone to try this, sit back and relax.

    Magical, Friendship, Epic

Who was your favorite character and why?

Brom because he was the storyteller throughout the journey

What does Gerrard Doyle bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Captures the emotion by using different pitch and tone for the many characters

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    The egg hatching.

    Any additional comments?

After a slow start, Eragon just keeps accelerating. An exhilarating adventure for all ages.

    Story
"Simple, but entertaining for all the family"

Nothing like the film, a hell of a lot better in my opinion with more emphasis on Dwarves and Elves.

    Story – 4/5

Eragon is a simple story concept that doesn’t break any new ground. That being said, I still found it highly entertaining. I think the story is aimed at teenagers, but being a 28 year old man, I still found it enjoyable. If you enjoyed Harry Potter, then this is aimed at the same audience.

Large battles and wars can be very complex in a novel, but I believe this is Christopher Paolini’s strongest point. The final battle was told very concisely, and wasn’t bogged down with too much detail, allowing the reader/listener to be swept up in the action and excitement of it.

There were elements of Eragon being a bit whiney at times, which can be annoying to an adult listener, but I was able to overlook this overall. The magic system is very simplistic, as Paolini obviously wanted to delve straight in with an action packed story for his young target audience. This means that the story lacks depth at times, but this is made up for in later the volumes.

    Performance – 4/5

Gerrard Doyle has a strong American accent, which I thought I would dislike, but he was actually very good. Each character’s voice was distinctive, and the tone of the story was portrayed very well.

He suits this type of story nicely, but I can not see him narrating a gritty, more adult novel like Game of Thrones very well at all, so if I find him narrating a novel I am considering, I will be careful about the type of story it is before purchasing.

    Overall – 4/5

    "Well spoken"

Paolini has brought us a magical world, and Doyle has brought it to life. He has a good speaking voice and gives each of the characters individuality and strength however small their part.

    "Great but..."

I really love this book. The story is told well but the voice used for the dragon is a bit obnoxious. It's all gurggly like someone who's smoked too much. I understand the perspective the narrator was going for and I can get over the annoying dragon voice because the story is just that wonderful. It's the kind of story you can really get wrapped up into and really makes you want to find out what happens next.
