Publisher's summary

The multiple-award-winning science-fiction master returns to the universe that is his greatest triumph - the world of Hyperion and The Fall ofHyperion - with a novel even more magnificent than its predecessors.

Dan Simmons's Hyperion was an immediate sensation on its first publication in 1989. This staggering multifaceted tale of the far future heralded the conquest of the science-fiction field by a man who had already won the World Fantasy Award for his first novel (Song of Kali) and had also published one of the most well-received horror novels in the field, Carrion Comfort. Hyperion went on to win the Hugo Award as Best Novel, and it and its companion volume, The Fall of Hyperion, took their rightful places in the science-fiction pantheon of new classics.

Here, Simmons returns to this richly imagined world of technological achievement, excitement, wonder and fear. Endymion is a story about love and memory, triumph and terror - an instant candidate for the field's highest honors.

A superb story, smart and violent, I love it. Just one more book to go and already knowing that I gonna miss it.

Enter the Shriek

What made the experience of listening to Endymion the most enjoyable?

I really enjoyed how the story told two sides of one continuous event. It kept the overall cast at a manageable number and really let you explore the characters. For the most part, every few chapters would bounce back and forth between the two sides and offer their perspective. Victor Bevine was awesome as usual.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Endymion?

You'll know the part... way at the end. But, there were many parts that stood out. Getting a more in depth understanding of the whole space/time travel thing and how the resurrection was evolved etc. We are given a retcon on a few things but you'll take it in stride.

Which scene was your favorite?

The very ending I had to look up on the web because I didn't understand it. There was not one particular scene, but I enjoyed how the story allowed for different "settings" and it all made sense.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I blazed through 23 hours in about two weeks. If I could have I would have listened to it all in one sitting. This is really a page turner. It's true though, that at the end of the first leg it does get a little stagnant.

Any additional comments?

If you have listened to the first two books and you're not sure about the next two... this is definitely something you should pick up. You won't be disappointmented. I worried that I would miss the original crew but they are mentioned here and there and the new characters are just as good.

Late breaking story - still worth a part 2

I really liked this story - the narrator's character is, for this portion of the sorry at least, a little boring and 2D , but there's a lot of great mining of the best breadcrumbs leftover from the first duo of books. That I'm immediately going for the next one is the best indicator of my enjoyment.

5 stars, across the board

I only wish this series could've been longer than 4 books. Great story. This series makes you think about our place in the universe...interesting take life, god, sentience, on how insanely advanced AI and life can get, and how...important humanity is...

Fantastic return to the Web

Just like the first two, this is a great story taking place 247 yrs after events in "Hyperion" and "Fall of Hyperion."

Only negative is in the narrator's performance. He changes the voice for A. Bettik about halfway through. All other voices are xonsistent.

All in all a great story and I can't wait till next month for "Rise of Endymion.

Fantastic story brought to justice by narrator

Each character was voiced superbly and the pace and tone was exceptionally done. I love this series and this narrator.

Highly recommended

Dan is a solid scifi writer. I loved the story arc and his descriptions of the world. There are even some exciting fight scenes.

Speak Italian?

I have really enjoyed the first 3 books. But, this last book has too many Italian, Islamic and Chinese names in it that it made me fast forward through a lot of it. If you speak these languages you will enjoy it. I don’t !

Characters develop so beautifully

The Hyperion series continues, and it is so beautifully written. I am completely entranced still. I love the characters and how they develop and talk. The interweaving of the times, and the complexities of the plots. And through it all the characters grow and change. So amazing.

Incredible third book in the series. My favorite yet.

The one thing I cannot stand is the music that comes in at crucial parts of the books. It paints its own picture that disallows me from concocting one in my mind and isn’t that the whole point of a written story—even one that is being read aloud?
