Jorg would be emperor. It is a position not to be gained by the sword but rather by vote. And never in living memory has anyone secured a majority of the vote, leaving the Broken Empire long without a leader. Jorg has plans to change that - one way or the other. He’s uncovered even more of the lost technology of the land, and he won’t hesitate to use it. But he soon finds an adversary standing in his way, a necromancer unlike any he has ever faced - a figure hated and feared even more than himself: the Dead King. The boy who would rule all may have finally met his match....

Everything. I absolutely adore this series, I love the character of Jorg and even more I love how Mark Lawrence continually move the story from current to 4 or 5 years ago. It entirely brings together the man he was and the man he is and why he makes the choices he does.
I have few absolute favorite books in the fantasy genre that reach an epic status in my mind, definitely the king killer chronicles, blood song and the way of kings. I would say Mark Lawrences series also creates the epic feel of a world with its own customs and way of life, gods ands myths that my adored epic series do, however, because Jorg is largely the sole focus of the series and all other characters continuously only carrying minor roles, I think this book does slightly fall short in that. I almost wish Mark Lawrence would have had separate books for each of Jorgs years, but then I suppose to have lived even more years with Jorg, the ending would have been absolutely devastating. For the series he wrote and the length, the ending was perfectly chosen.
This narrator does an EXCELLENT job! I didn't even think twice about getting the audible book as opposed to reading it. He uses different voices/inflections for the different characters, even does a fantastic girl voice!
The antics of Jorg would continually make me chuckle and smile. Smile that he was so completely genius and brilliant in his scheming.
If you like slightly dark humour, blood shed, or just want a book to get so absorbed in that you lose yourself entirely. Get this series, get it, live it, love it. Mourn it once its over.
These books are just excellent!!!! Mark Lawrence became one of my favorite authors with the Thorns trilogy. Gritty, great action, original plot, fantastic anti-hero. Clearly, I'm not a great writer. However, I encourage you to try to ignore my rather unoriginal review and try these very NOT-run-of-the-mill books. First time I sat down with them, I inhaled them all in about a week. Once I coaxed my boyfriend into trying them, I decided I couldn't discuss them and overcome the itch to read them again. So good. Thank you Mr. Lawrence.
I absolutely loved this whole series. it drew me in, the astounding mystery with the builders and the correlation to our modern world was a phenomenal twist and added a new element to a fantasy universe. Lawrence killed it with his deep metaphorical intellect and kept me wanting more from the anti hero, but I applaud the direction he went with the finale especially. wonderful read and a few years from now I see myself returning to read again!
good progress from book one to three. great characters very cool idea's. very refreshing, good use of paper! Absolutely loved it and so did the people I car pool with.
I can not think of enough adjectives to describe how well written this story is. It is clear that Mark Lawrence has poured his heart and soul into this trilogy. Through out the journey Jorg is sometimes stirring, sometimes cruel and thoughtless and sometimes just plain evil. Despite all of this you find your self rooting for him and knowing that his will is stronger than the other guys. With writing that rejects, or at least reshapes, the clichés of other books about heroes and likable characters Mark Lawrence took all of us on a wonderful journey. A journey that saw young Jorg grow in to a man and eventually learn to love something more than himself. The way the book ended would have been so out of character for the Jorg of the first two books but the way Mark weaves the story it is completely believable at the end.
While this book is anything but gentle or a deathless work of art, in fact Jorg in the previous books murdered an entire country down to the last baby, it is captivating. Even when he was cruel and heartless there was always a reason for it. I will miss the Journey with Jorg and his cut throat band of brothers. This has been one of the best reads or rather listens I have had in perhaps ever. I have decided to continue the Journey with Prince Jalan Kendeth in the Red Queens war series and have to say I quite enjoy it as well. You can not go wrong with this trilogy. Worth every credit.
This was so well done. The story was both thrillingly action-oriented and poetic. The ending was so well-conceived. Writing a good ending is a real art. Like landing a plane well. He pulled it off masterfully.
This narrator, James Clamp, is now one of my favourites.
Really great experience.
I couldn't have asked for a better end to such a unique and exciting trilogy. I'm looking forward to discovering the rest of Mark Lawrence's work. And the voice work on this audiobook was absolutely incredible!
This entire series is just an amazing blend of fantasy and sci-fi. I can't remember another book that melds the genres together so seamlessly and in a way that feels effortless to the reader.
The writing is quite excellent, the pacing is quick, and the plot is interesting and hard to predict. I can't recommend these enough.
Also, for what it's worth, I've seen these books described as dark and grim and grimdark. Sure there's some violence and some sadness, but it's nothing out of the ordinary. Plus, I laughed out loud quite a few times as well. These books don't deserve such a reputation for darkness.
The narration is awesome. James Clamp is perfect for the story, and I would like to listen to more books of his.
