"Christopher Paolini is a true rarity."—The Washington Post

Darkness falls… despair abounds… evil reigns… Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix. Now Eragon must travel to Ellésmera, land of the elves, for further training in the skills of the Dragon Rider: magic and swordsmanship. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and nothing is what it seems. Before long, Eragon doesn’t know whom he can trust.

Will the king’s dark hand strangle all resistance? Eragon may not escape with even his life. . . .

That you can immediately hit play and re-enter a beloved new world, or love story, or era from history is a gift to the devoted listener. But how to pick just 100 of these unique and immersive listening journeys? We defined a series as having a minimum of three books, and—after some debate—we decided the titles had to be anchored in fiction. Wonderful descriptor but odd acting choices

the narrator is talented, but his impersonation of the few female characters is awkward. Arya and Nasuada should be warrior women, and Sapphira's voice is just odd. Descriptive imaginative scenes of far away magical cities were told splendidly. Voices for all the male characters were great.

"Keeps you on your toes"

These books are always full of twists. The narrator's voice keeps to drawed in the whole time. If like drawves, elves & dragons, than this comes highly recommended.

War is brewing!

If you could sum up Eldest: The Inheritance Cycle, Book 2 in three words, what would they be?

This book is amazing and epic, but it can be dense at times. That's why I love listening to it because Gerard solves that problem for me. There's so much happening and we get several points of views and different angels of these different stories that begin to intertwine. It's awesome and so interesting.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Eragon is definitely my favorite, although I suppose it would be hard for him not to be since he's the main character. But we really see him grow and become a young man and the rider the world needs him to be. He has his struggles, but they never deter him from what he knows what he needs to do.

Have you listened to any of Gerard Doyle’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I love Gerard! I've listened to Eragon as well and this was a re-listen for me, but the last time I listen to Eldest I was in the seventh grade and I'm 20 now. But I've always loved his storytelling and he makes this tale come to life so beautifully! I even put off really getting into the book because I wanted to listen to Gerard's rendition!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definitely. I couldn't, unfortunately because life things kept getting in the way but I listened to this in about the span of a week! That was pretty insane to me because this is a super long audiobook and Eragon was much shorter and it took much longer to get through Eragon. I was so addicted though, I also finally have my phone all loaded up with the next one and I'm excited!

Any additional comments?

Yes! If you've ever been hesitant to pick this series up because of it's size or because you've heard how wordy Paolini can be- then you should definitely pick up the audiobook! Gerard does an amazing job in bringing the characters to life and listening through someone else tell the story makes the experience go quick. Highly, highly recommend!

Saphira’s “ voice” is almost unbearable.

Title of the review says it all. The narrator almost ruins one of my favorite series with a horrid portrayal of Saphira. I didn’t listen to the first book of the series on audiobook so it caught me off guard and I will certainly not listen to the last two if they have the same narrator. As far as the story goes, it’s great and I still love it 12 years after my first read.

Great story- Cookie Monster voice

The story is great, no complaints there. But why The is narrator decided to make the dragons sound like the Cookie Monster, I will never understand. Still worth listening to but it detracts from the overall effectiveness of the story telling.
