Publisher's summary

The Galactics arrived with their Battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined a vast Empire that spans the Milky Way. Our only worthwhile trade goods are our infamous mercenary legions, elite troops we sell to the highest alien bidder.

In 2122 a lost colony expedition contacts Earth, surprising our government. Colonization is against Galactic Law, and Legion Varus is dispatched to the system to handle the situation. Earth gave them sealed orders, but Earth is 35 lightyears away. The Legion commanders have a secret plan of their own. And then there's James McGill, who was never too good at listening to authority in the first place....

In Dust World, book two of the Undying Mercenaries Series, McGill is promoted to Specialist and sent to a frontier planet outside the Empire. Earth's status within the Empire will never be the same.

Protagonist sleeps around with everyone he can

Performance is fantastic and the overall story is great. The idea of the Galactics is intriguing and the story takes twists and turns I thoroughly enjoy. Every once in awhile there are swear words, but not overly used every other word like some books. Now while there is technically no R rated sexual content, the protagonist is a man whore. The whole side plot storyline of the book is the protagonist sleeping with as many women as he can. It's ridiculous and pointless. It is done in a PG fashion, the author makes the point 'the characters slept together' in as few words as that, but it happens constantly and even in the middle of battles. Seems ridiculous. Hoping the next book doesn't follow the same path.

Edit: it does follow that path and he consistently sleeps with more and more women.

I actually like this one more than I did the first

better storytelling narration as well as higher stakes in the story itself. I actually found myself giving a damn this time around. don't know why but I'm glad I gave the next book a second chance.

I’ve listened to these many times

Dust world is a critical story as it changes Earths reliance on mercenary contracts and opens up the potential plot lines. It demonstrates the heartlessness of the Galactics and sets James on his revolutionary pathway.

Excellent continuation of the series!

This was very entertaining. It was a great continuation of the series.

One of the things I like about B.V. Larson's books is their entertainment value as well as the speed of delivery. Unlike some writers (Ice and fire's G.R.R. Martin - a notable member of that group) when you start a series by B.V. Larson, there is a good chance that you will get regular installments and get a satisfying conclusion before too long.

What to expect from this book:
1. A good continuation of the last install
2. New aliens, new challenges
3. Same brash decision making from the main character, then pulling himself out by the skin of his teeth
4. Satisfying conclusion

His other series I have read, the Star Force series, is also very entertaining. If you are looking for a new series, you might like that one.

What to expect from Star Force:

1. A lot of space battles
2. Many alien races - some friendly, some not
3. Progressively intense - with a commander whose decisions you'll sometime love, some times hate, but never be on the fence about.
4. an ending that borrows from U.S History
5. A well defined enemy.

Good Followup To Steel World

Enjoyable followup to Steel World. Larson expands the Legion's Universe a bit more and leaves lots of room for more adventures in the future.
