Dune 2, second book in the series

This story picks up soon after Dune. It shows more details, and provides the next step in the story arc.

Pretty good

The first book was excellent. This one is a little harder to follow because it spends so much time with conversations that are all cryptic and mean something else. The audio cast is great, the same actors from the first book, but about halfway through the book it switched from a male narrator to a female one for like an hour, and then goes back to the guy we’ve been listening to since book 1. That was my biggest complaint besides the slower cryptic story.

I consider it a bridge book to the third one, and I’m eager to finish the original trilogy.

An interesting if flawed sequel

For those that enjoyed Dune, as I did, I would suggest continuing with this book. The Audible performance is equally exquisite and it does let you live with the characters for a bit longer.

That said, it’s hard to look past some of the flaws. While arguably grander in scope than Dune, it routinely fails to live up to expectations. Concepts and devices are introduced only to never be seen again. Characters vacillate haphazardly from omniscient to foolish, omnipotent to impotent. It’s clear that Herbert was trying to get a message across but it’s honestly hard to say with any certainty what that message was.

Probably the most interesting aspects of this are what it left out, notably the brief mentions of a distant history.

Again, though, if you read and enjoyed the first, give this a whirl.

Fantastic sequel to the unmatchable Dune.

While slow in nature, Messiah never ceases to engage the reader/listener. Herbert's depiction of prescience is unlike any other and is developed more thoroughly in his second installment.

Rather obscure follow-up to Dune

Not sure why F. Herbert started this story so far after Paul's ascendancy as Mau Dib. Also, why so short? Seems perhaps Messiah was originally going to be the tail end of Dune, since the original ends rather abruptly. This audio book has a better, evenly-paced character narration. However, at 8 hours, it doesn't seem worth a whole credit. Well, going to listen to Children of Dune next...

Mediocre

I was excited for the follow up of the first book, but this one just wasn't as good.

Disappointment

The first book was a very good balance of action, world building, interesting plot, and politics. This book was only politics and boring stretched out dialogue. I would only recommend this book to those who want to continue with the rest of the Dune series.
