NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Stellan Skarsgård, and Charlotte Rampling

Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family—and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction. Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

Featured Article: Dune (2021)—Book vs. Movie

The very first book to win the Nebula Award, Frank Herbert's Dune has long been a fixture of the sci-fi world. It's no surprise, then, that yet another filmmaker has taken a stab at bringing this classic to the screen. The latest effort, by Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve, captures the first half of the epic novel. The reviews have been generally positive, with critics and audiences blown away by the scale and sheer ambition of the adaptation. Overall, Villeneuve's 2021 adaptation of Herbert's sci-fi classic is quite faithful. But in what small ways does the film differ from the book?

Compelling and Entertaining

Loved it. I'll undoubtedly listen to it again some day and I'm eager to learn more about the compelling universe in which this novel is set. The constant interplay of factional power and diplomacy is nicely spaced between dynamic character interactions and their personal development. War and fighting play large roles in the book, but the battles are on par with other chapters and events, which I found refreshing.

The acting was diverse and fit the characters. Well done!

Inconsistent

They tried to use voice actors but only half the chapters use them. Great book!

Fremen fan.

There is a good reason it is a classic of the genre, resplendent and wise.

Great narrator.... BUT

One of the voice actors (who voices the baron) only voices it half the book. Sometimes the narrator does the voice and it confuses entirely. What happened? Such poor quality taints an otherwise excellent reading of a great book.

Interesting story

The story was interesting, though the first quarter was a bit slow. The way parts of the book had voice actors for the characters and other parts had just the narrator voicing them was VERY odd and distracting, particularly with the Baron. Difficult to hear James earl jones for a minute, then some weak little voice for a minute, voicing the same character.

A Brilliant Story. Truly Bar-Setting Sci-Fi

This groundbreaking, and slightly psychedelic, sci-fi story is worthy of every bit of high praise it receives. It is true the voicework can seem relatively inconsistent, but the narraration is still fantastic. and doesn't take away from the great story being told.

Really entertaining. A fun ride.

A great book. Pushing 50 years since it was published, it holds up well.

The performance was solid although it seemed there was a bit of inconsistency with the performers, which was a bit confusing.
