Publisher's summary

The first book of best-selling sci-fi author Jack Campbell’s new series "Beyond the Frontier" returns to find Captain John “Black Jack" Geary, the hero of the "Lost Fleet" series, awoken from cryogenic sleep to take command of the fleet.

Geary’s legendary exploits have earned him the adoration of the people—and the enmity of politicians convinced that a living hero can be a very inconvenient thing. The century-long war between the Alliance and the Syndicate Worlds may be over, but Geary and his newly christened First Fleet have been ordered back into action to investigate the aliens occupying the far side of Syndic space and to determine how much of a threat they represent to the Alliance. And while the Syndic Worlds are no longer united, individually they may be more dangerous than ever before. Geary knows that members of the military high command and the government question his loyalty to the Alliance and fear his staging a coup, so he can’t help but wonder if the newly christened First Fleet is being sent to the far side of space on a suicide mission.

William C. Dietz, the author of the "Legion of the Damned" series, calls Dreadnaught "a rousing adventure", and Elizabeth Moon, the Nebula Award-winning author of the "Vatta's War" series, says it’s “loaded with edge-of-your-seat combat". Read by Christian Rummel, who has narrated The Lost Fleet series to excellent reviews, Dreadnaught promises to be an out-of-this-world experience.

BONUS AUDIO: Includes an exclusive introduction written and read by author Jack Campbell.

Could have done without the Frist Five Hours

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Once you get past the first 5 hours of yada yada yada, it becomes a captivating story. I almost turned it off and started another book.

The book would be much better if the first 5 hours were condensed to about 1/2 hr.

not my favorite book in the series

This was not my favorite book in the series. It introduced some new plot elements but fell short of establishing interest in them for me. I'll read the next book, more out of interest in the main two characters than the plot---I wish more attention was given to the other characters in the story

Impatiently awaiting the next volume

Luckily I came to this series later in life (about two months ago in August of 2011), and had a whole whack of books to keep my curiosity sated throughout. But after madly reading through the first 5 (?) books, I am now like many others waiting for the next volume in the series. I enjoy the military scifi genre. They are generally easy reads following a single storyline that always keeps my attention. I consider this series really one book that is cut up into several volumes, and that is okay. It keeps me coming back for more.

good story cluttered with needless naval gazing

The characters spend far more time discussing what they should not do then actually doing things. this should be an amazing book, it is creative and well thought out. yet all of that creativity is buried under a mountain of second guessing and minutia.

Excellent start to a new phase for 'Black Jack'

What made the experience of listening to Dreadnaught the most enjoyable?

I can listen to it while driving to work without being interrupted by the kids at home while trying to read the book ! Way to go audio books!

What did you like best about this story?

The unexpected twists and personalities of the 'other intelligent life forms'

What does Christian Rummel and Jack Campbell (Introduction) bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think Christian has done a good job of trying to convey the mood (stress, happy etc). Jack Cambell's intro gave me a better appreciation of the difficulties in writing Science fiction.

Any additional comments?

This book was an excellent continuation of the original series while still starting a new phase of Black Jack's life. While I don't think you have to have read (or listened to) the first 6 books, why wouldn't you? The background from the previous books is helpful.

Another Great Book

If you love the others in this series, you will love this one too! As many have noted, the novel got off to a slower start with a heavier emphasis on non-combat story elements. However, I still really enjoyed the beginning of the novel. I believed it was true to life and covered gave a depth to issues a commander would have to deal with. Really looking forward to the next book. Can't wait :)

Epic!

Need I say more? Ok how's this? Fantastic, thrilling, edge of your seat writing, and a great start to a new series. Anyone that has read or listened to Jack Campbell's (aka John G Hemry) The Lost Fleet series knows, that this is a writer that knows how to tell a space story. Hemry doesn't disappoint with Dreadnaught. Personally I list it as his best to date (Invincible surpasses it but it wasn't written when I first read Dreadnaught). I don't usually enjoy forwards in a book, but Hemry does this one himself. That too was impressive. Dreadnaught is an exciting read and really made it difficult for me to put down. I think this is one for every library.

Christian Rummel comes back for the new series and does a superb job bringing old characters into a new series. Rummel is to be commended for his vocal performace with this piece. A great performance of a great book!

Entertaining and action packed

Would you consider the audio edition of Dreadnaught to be better than the print version?

Unknown, did not read in print

Who was your favorite character and why?

Black Jack Geary of course

Have you listened to any of Christian Rummel and Jack Campbell (Introduction) ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

As good as the first series

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No

Any additional comments?

Not a great book but very entertaining for what it is. That is an action packed space opera with plenty of battle scenes and characters that stand up to the story without getting bogged down. The characters have evolved since the first series as you would expect real people to and so has the Alliance. It is a good extension of the original series.
