Publisher's summary

The first book of best-selling sci-fi author Jack Campbell’s new series "Beyond the Frontier" returns to find Captain John “Black Jack" Geary, the hero of the "Lost Fleet" series, awoken from cryogenic sleep to take command of the fleet.

Geary’s legendary exploits have earned him the adoration of the people—and the enmity of politicians convinced that a living hero can be a very inconvenient thing. The century-long war between the Alliance and the Syndicate Worlds may be over, but Geary and his newly christened First Fleet have been ordered back into action to investigate the aliens occupying the far side of Syndic space and to determine how much of a threat they represent to the Alliance. And while the Syndic Worlds are no longer united, individually they may be more dangerous than ever before. Geary knows that members of the military high command and the government question his loyalty to the Alliance and fear his staging a coup, so he can’t help but wonder if the newly christened First Fleet is being sent to the far side of space on a suicide mission.

William C. Dietz, the author of the "Legion of the Damned" series, calls Dreadnaught "a rousing adventure", and Elizabeth Moon, the Nebula Award-winning author of the "Vatta's War" series, says it’s “loaded with edge-of-your-seat combat". Read by Christian Rummel, who has narrated The Lost Fleet series to excellent reviews, Dreadnaught promises to be an out-of-this-world experience.

Rummel's voices have the ability to capture you .

What did you love best about Dreadnaught?

We all would like to think and act like Admiral Geary....a man with integrity, honor, intelligence and compassion. His consistency and morals elevate the fleet, the soldiers and the galaxy to more honorable behavior. Seeing his thought processes made each situation a unique and highly anticipated.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Definitely!

What does Christian Rummel and Jack Campbell (Introduction) bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Yes, the storylines are woven together well with action, conflict and great word pictures used in balanced fashion to imprint one's imagination.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Nothing too bothersome. All his characters had identifiable voice patterns and accents to give life to each person.

Any additional comments?

Hurry with the next one!!!!

Start at the beginning

Start this series at the beginning. Do NOT read this book first. If you do, you will hate the first 5.5 hour Part 1, in which the past is discussed, at length, incompletely and boringly, forever. Finally, in Part 2, some action and adventure occur that livens things up a bit. The Audible review did not make the point that starting at the beginning in book 1 of this Series is critical to the enjoyment of the story.

Yawn, to much politics not enough Sci fi

This book shouldn't be classified as scifi, it's all politics with some fleet combat thrown in. No real detail on warfare or aliens that excite. Pales in comparison to any BV Larson books

Good story, Excellent narration

Where does Dreadnaught rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is probably one of the best audio books I've listened to so far. Christian Rummel does an amazing job bringing the numerous key characters to life. The story is fairly engrossing as well, though not necessarily as action packed as the original Lost Fleet series. There is some great action, but this series seems to focus more on political intrigue and has significantly more dialogue than Lost Fleet. The Fleet actions are toned way down this time, while the universe building has been expanded and exploration becomes the focus. I haven't read this story in text format, and based on the content, I probably would have dropped it early on. But the stellar narration performance turns what is probably a long, dragging first third of the book into a captivating political drama.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Des Jani is a much more dynamic and interesting character in this series than she was in the last. The final events of the last series seem to have allowed her to relax some more and become a very charming, witty character as opposed to the seeming backdrop character she was in the original series.

What does Christian Rummel and Jack Campbell (Introduction) bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Christian's performance really helps the characters stand out as individuals. While it seemed like the accents he used for some characters didn't fit their names, his ability to vary accent, tone, and inflections really helped bring life to a story that was very heavy on dialogue.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Finally, a chance to kill Ewoks!

Sets the ground work for an excellent series.

Unlike the Lost fleet series before this there is a notable turn from purely military matters, detailed ship engagements, though those are still present and a turn towards politics and explorations. This brings a depth to the story that should not be easily discounted. New characters and story arcs are introduced and the brick work is laid. Excellent story that excites one for stories to come, Christian Rummel continues his excellent narration.
