Publisher's summary

The first book of best-selling sci-fi author Jack Campbell’s new series "Beyond the Frontier" returns to find Captain John “Black Jack" Geary, the hero of the "Lost Fleet" series, awoken from cryogenic sleep to take command of the fleet.

Geary’s legendary exploits have earned him the adoration of the people—and the enmity of politicians convinced that a living hero can be a very inconvenient thing. The century-long war between the Alliance and the Syndicate Worlds may be over, but Geary and his newly christened First Fleet have been ordered back into action to investigate the aliens occupying the far side of Syndic space and to determine how much of a threat they represent to the Alliance. And while the Syndic Worlds are no longer united, individually they may be more dangerous than ever before. Geary knows that members of the military high command and the government question his loyalty to the Alliance and fear his staging a coup, so he can’t help but wonder if the newly christened First Fleet is being sent to the far side of space on a suicide mission.

William C. Dietz, the author of the "Legion of the Damned" series, calls Dreadnaught "a rousing adventure", and Elizabeth Moon, the Nebula Award-winning author of the "Vatta's War" series, says it’s “loaded with edge-of-your-seat combat". Read by Christian Rummel, who has narrated The Lost Fleet series to excellent reviews, Dreadnaught promises to be an out-of-this-world experience.

Good Solid Fun

A good solid military sci-fi novel. The narration is very good and the plot moves along nicely.

Keeps me wanting more

Another Great book. But why change to Beyond the Frontier? This should be the 7th book in The Lost Fleet Saga. It picks up just where the 7th book Victorious leaves off! Their is nothing in the book to warrent a new title. Anyway it's great!

Makes you think

I'm a fanboy for Hemry/Campbell, mostly because I think I believe his vision of the future. His explanations of humanity's first contact with Xeno society is rife with believable enigma(that's a pun, sorta). A great companion the the original series

The politics of space adventures

The narrator was remarkable with the many different voices required by the story. the story left me high and dry. My fault for expecting a story closer to the synopsis. There was way too much politics in the story for my taste. However it did provide a different perspective.

bodaciously morphinominal!!!

This story got me into its lore. Worth the money and time to invest. Jack Campbell is very creative and makes nerds, geeks, and dorks for honored to take part in reading, the voice acting also helps with pulling you into the world. Don't miss a great opportunity.

Good start but no ending - not a standalone

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoy the concept this series, and have enjoyed listening to it. I haven't ready any of the other books in the prior series, but I was able to pick this up and didn't feel lost.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

What really bothers me about this book is that there is no resolution of anything by the end of the book. It simply ends, almost mid-sentence. You might as well tack "To Be Continued" onto the end. It's feels annoying like they took a finished story and intentionally broke it up into unfinished pieces - like links in a chain - just to get readers to spend more money buying what is essentially one book.

Also there are lots of things going on that I feel "Jack" should be quicker to understand - he's obviously a smart guy and yet he seems pretty slow to pick up on what's going on around him.

What about Christian Rummel and Jack Campbell (Introduction) ’s performance did you like?

I think Jack Campbell does a good job with his introduction because it's not random fluff to give him an excuse to talk- he actually makes you sit back and think for a second.

Was Dreadnaught worth the listening time?

Sure - but you better be ready to buy all the books in the series if you want to actually get any resolution (if even then).

I Love This Series

What did you love best about Dreadnaught?

The story continues from The Lost Fleet, but isn't the same. It never lost my interest.

Any additional comments?

I would never have picked this book for myself, I got it for my husband to listen to. We ended up listening to The Lost Fleet series together and then we wanted more... I wanted more. This is a really great series.
