Publisher's summary

The Companions are back in this first volume, which features an untold story from the War of the Lance. The beloved heroes return: Tanis, Raistlin and Caramon, Sturm Brightblade, Tasslehoff, and Flint Fireforge. Old friends, such as Riverwind and Goldmoon and Laurana, travel with them. Old enemies are here too, as the companions encounter new adventures and new dangers in the very beginning months of the War of the Lance.

This book starts with the celebration of a wedding. The companions believe they have slain the evil Dragon Highlord Verminaard. They have rescued the refugees from Pax Tharkas and taken them to a valley in the Kharolis mountains.

After they are attacked by the Dragon Armies, Tanis and Flint are sent to search for the long lost dwarven kingdom of Thorbardin, hoping to persuade the dwarves to give the refugees shelter for winter.

Each of the other companions face their own trials. Raistlin remembers that, according to tales of old, the key to Thorbardin lies in the haunted fortress known as Skullcap. The others want nothing to do with this accursed place, but Raistlin feels strangely drawn to the ruins, and he persuades a reluctant Caramon to accompany him there.

Sturm becomes obsessed with finding the legendary Hammer of Kharas, and his obsession nearly plunges the party into disaster. Riverwind, now chieftain of his tribe, is made the reluctant leader of the refugees and worries that he is not suited for the task. Tika Waylan must decide if she has the courage to undertake a perilous journey to save those she loves from certain death, while Tanis Half-Elven wrestles with his faith in the newly returned gods.

But it is the dwarf, Flint Fireforge, who faces the most crucial test.

The best Dragonlance book!

Story is excellent, with the classic heros! They are more fleshed out and the style is more pleasant than the originals

I just love these characters!

So great to be able to enjoy the lives of Tanis & co. again. So great a modern fantasy book with some strong female characters, all the characters with depth. Narrator did a good job--it took a bit to get used to Tas' voice, but after a while, I felt the narrator's interpretation really was on mark. She did a good job making the characters' voices sound different, the voices matched the personalities of the characters well and I could tell who was talking just by voice along. I wish they would put the DragonLance Chronicles into Audiobook form, maybe someday...

Like coming home

I loved these books in high school, some 25 years ago. Catching up with Tass and Tanis and the gang again was like a homecoming for me. So maybe my love of this book is colored by nostalgia. Still, it was the great adventure romp now that it was then. Sure, it's light reading that just makes you smile. But that's what I want from AD&D books. Tass' voice took some getting used to, but that could just be because it didn't match the one in my head when I first met him a quarter a century ago.

Great book, narration not as bad as they say...

Ok, I loved the DL books since I was a kid and read the original trilogy... I love the characters, the story, and am a big fan of Weis and Hickman.

The narration is getting a bad rep, it is not the best narration by any means, but she does a pretty good job... once you get used to her. The worst part is the voice she uses for Tas, that was irritating... the rest were ok.

Anyway, the story is so good it is worth the listen for sure. I am just starting book 2 now.

I love the atory..all dragonlance...but dont ever have female readers again. I am a woman but I cant stand the way they make the men's voices sound. especially Tanis voice. He sounds like he's on helium.

Great story. Narrator meh.

Love the story and the narration was ok except she butchers Tas. It's actually painful to listen to her take on his voice it's like a drunk circus monkey.

Great book, poor reading

This book is epic. I love the story and the characters. You can also see the difference in the writing of the authors from their first book all those years ago to this one. They definitely improved their art. I would recommend reading the lost chronicles after the original 3 and not during and in between. The writing style has changed and it could throw you off. Thats not a bad thing. As I said they have become better authors if anything but the books are written decades apart.

My one big grip is really with the narrator of the audio book. I did not like her character voices. Tas was especially horrible. I really didn't want to continue listening to it and instead wanted to just pick up my hard copy. The guy who did the chronicles does a way better job. I will say this author did a wonderful job on the female characters but I don't think that is worth what she did to Tas. He sounds like he got hit in the head and can't speak right anymore. It ruined the whole thing for me. If you can get past that, its still worth listening to. The other voices that not as good as the narrator from the other books, is still acceptable. I just don't know who Margret and Tracy could have heard that and said, "ya that will work!". I shutter.

Great continuation of the Saga

Loved the story. Great reading performance. The performance drew me back in to Dragonlance Realm.
