Publisher's summary

On the beautiful planet Pern, colonized for centuries, Land Holders and Craftsmen have traditionally tithed food and supplies to the dragonweyrs to which they are bound. In times past, the mighty telepathic dragons and their riders were the only protection from the dreaded, life-threatening Thread.

But it has been over 400 years since the last Threadfall, and some people have come to doubt that the menace will every strike again. But F'lar, rider of Pern's greatest bronze dragon, has no such illusions. The Red Star is near; Thread will fall soon.

Book another flight with the Dragonriders of Pern.

Epic classic Science fiction/Fantasy

I have read this series of books many times, and love it every time. I been revisiting many of my favorite books, and this is another must read for classic science fiction/fantasy. A gripping story, amazing characters....and a well formed world.
Once you start you will want to explore the world of Pern and enjoy the amazing work of Anne Mccaffrey.

MOSTLY ENJOYABLE

I loved the story, the characters-and especially the dragons! But the narrator is not a very good actor. He puts on a friuty voice that became very unpleasant.

Classic and Comicbook like

Most people are already aware of these adventures. Anne MacAffrey did a fantastic job of making this book culturally dense, while simultaneously allowing the book to be read quickly, with brief descriptions of what the characters and creatures were doing and how they were capable. Before you know it, you've already learned the creatures have superpowers. The hero's journey is glossed over a bit, but each character's struggles are on full display, and MacAffrey allows us time to appreciate who these characters are, what their relationships are, and why we should care. An influential piece of literature that has been discovered and enjoyed again and again. The narrator chosen to read this tale allowed was nicely picked. Though he doesn't have the widest range, he still delivers in such manner that is as easy to follow as it is engaging, and providing a voice that doesn't simultaneously distract from what he's reading. Even if you aren't that into creatures, you can still take something from this.

good performance of a sci fi classic

the pern series is a childhood favorite of mine (i read these books too young - there’s quite a bit of violence, sex, and implied sexual violence…) so i’ve been looking forward to an audiobook… though i’ve found that sometimes hearing someone else voice characters ive had in my head for decades can be disappointing. but i liked this performance overall, though i’ve two beefs with it -

1) it’s a 9 hour book divided into only four chapters. yikes.
2) the crunchy quality of the audio makes the narrator sometimes sound a bit robotic.

i like how the narrator voice acts the dialogue as if he were reading for a play or movie, with a lot of emotion behind it. i didn’t really notice “mouth sounds,” but i listened on speakers and not headphones.

i do also wish it had been a female narrator - although flar is a major point of view character for a chunk of the book, let’s be real, lessa is the protagonist.

Woman and her dragon!

Where does Dragonflight rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In my the top ten of books list of audiobooks I have own.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Lessa is a wonderful strong female character. Who fights for what she believes in.

Have you listened to any of Dick Hill’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listen to Dick Hill's performance in this series.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Lessa impresses Ramoth, her beloved golden dragon.

Any additional comments?

I fell in love with Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series 30 years ago. Then as a young girl, there wasn't strong roles for women, instead of the usual plots in which women are only rescued by the male hero. McCaffrey brings out real a believable heroine in Lessa. McCaffrey makes you want to live on Pern. Go on a flight of fancy with graceful golden dragon wings and leave the world behind.

Joann: You gotta love these books!

What made the experience of listening to Dragonflight the most enjoyable?

My son got me hooked on the Pern books back in the late 70s. They're still breathtaking, and better when someone reads them too you.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dragonflight?

When Lesa had the connection with her dragon. That was a heart rending moment.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No life hasn't that long a listen time for me. But I never fell asleep while listening.

Any additional comments?

I love Ann Mccaffeny. I lost my son last year at the age of 57. But we had such a connection with the books we shared. She as one of the top of the lists.
