Publisher's summary

On the beautiful planet Pern, colonized for centuries, Land Holders and Craftsmen have traditionally tithed food and supplies to the dragonweyrs to which they are bound. In times past, the mighty telepathic dragons and their riders were the only protection from the dreaded, life-threatening Thread.

But it has been over 400 years since the last Threadfall, and some people have come to doubt that the menace will every strike again. But F'lar, rider of Pern's greatest bronze dragon, has no such illusions. The Red Star is near; Thread will fall soon.

Book another flight with the Dragonriders of Pern.

A Great Classic

my wife introduced me to this series, and it is as good as she made it out to be.

It was a little bit difficult for me to keep track of some of the characters at times, I feel like if there was more distinction between their voices in the narration, I could have enjoyed the book a little bit more. That said, the narrator really had some interesting inflections that he did that made the characters a bit more interesting, things that I've not heard in audio books before.

passionate reading

of a story that has aged only partially well... still, it’s the classic entry into the saga of Pern.

Let's Fly Between

This book started slow and sped up unexpectedly. It left me wanting more. Can't wait to see what the Dragon Men do next. We get to see the effect of a culture's lost history, and watch it get rediscovered. So many surprises await us in this book.

Love the Dragonriders!

Would you listen to Dragonflight again? Why?

I love Anne McCaffrey's stories. I have the whole series in hardback books. I have read and re-read them many times.

Any additional comments?

I was very disappointed in this recording. The performance was good and I am a fan of Dick Hill. However, the recording sounded like it had another track underneath it as I could hear a shadow voice behind the main sound track. Also, about mid-way of Part 1 the story flipped back and repeated itself for one scene. Don't know why this happened or why the sound track seems flawed.

Good Story; Great Audio

Where does Dragonflight rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Among the highest. Not the very top, but definitely in the top 20.

What did you like best about this story?

The uniqueness of the world McCaffrey developed, and the realistic magic involved.

What about Dick Hill’s performance did you like?

He had a good voice and emoted at proper times. He also changed voices so that it wasn't difficult to determine who in the story was speaking.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I didn't burst into laughter or cry at any given point. My most extreme reaction was being irritated at Lessa's childish avior at the end of the story.

Any additional comments?

It surprises me that this was written in 1968. McCaffrey was an author ahead of her time, and a fantastic one at that.

My happy place

A fully realized world and compelling srory line. I have loved these books since I first read them nearly 40 years ago. I read them to my son as he was growing up and we still share those memories. So glad that Todd McCaffrey is continuing the story.

exciting

not the voice I would have chosen for this story. he reads F'lar as very harsh. And Less a as too breathless. But as always Anne McCaffery's story is Epic!!

My favourite series ever

This is the one series I am in the process of owning in all formats book, e and audible. I couldn’t be happier with this audible the narrative was great and the story holds through the years as I first read it in the 80’s. Everyone should visit Pern!

Great original story and audio acting, as the classics usually are.

Great original story and audio acting, as the classics usually are. I found the story a bit hard to follow sometimes, as the scenes occasionally jumped so quickly that you may not notice right away in audio form, though moat likely you’d not have this reading the hardcopy.
