Publisher's summary

On the beautiful planet Pern, colonized for centuries, Land Holders and Craftsmen have traditionally tithed food and supplies to the dragonweyrs to which they are bound. In times past, the mighty telepathic dragons and their riders were the only protection from the dreaded, life-threatening Thread.

But it has been over 400 years since the last Threadfall, and some people have come to doubt that the menace will every strike again. But F'lar, rider of Pern's greatest bronze dragon, has no such illusions. The Red Star is near; Thread will fall soon.

Book another flight with the Dragonriders of Pern.

A wonderful beginning to the 9th pass

Always a pleasure to hear the voice of Pern in Dick Hill narrating.

The master Harper of Pern should be enjoyed before this for more in depth pre-pass lore.

First published, first in our hearts

Loved it. Dick Hill is a narration God, and performs well. I also love hearing the story rather than just reading it. Listening to these stories is how I spend time with my wife, and we both enjoyed hearing this story again.

Humanity, warts and all!!

Wonderful! It takes all kinds to
Make a real world seem real to strangers ignorant of everything inside an authors
Mind. I read these books years ago and still enjoy meeting the characters again. Trying to get my grandchildren to read them now. Maybe I’ll buy them all Audible memberships and the first three books for Christmas.
All 8 are in their 20’s now. They might like a bit of escapism right about now!

Personality of main character not what i expected.

I have loved these stories for years, so I was dismayed to hear F”lar (Not Filar !) voiced as being somewhat pompous and arrogant, I liked him better when he was the young, kind person finding his way that I heard every time I read this book.

the plot line is interesting

the characters and dialog felt a little stilted, even old fashioned. I'm surprised by that because I didn't feel that way when I read it in my youth 40 years ago!

Mixed Feelings

While this is a piece of fantastic science fiction and there is do much to love about its incredibly original storyline, there are parts of its composition that do not age well. It does not help that the narrator decided to take the most literal and aggressive interpretation of the story which made certain scenes transform from a couple challenging and rebuking one another to blatant misogyny and abuse. i love much of this story but be aware that its age does show.
