Paksenarrion, once a sheepfarmer's daughter, now a veteran warrior, meets new challenges as she breaks up a robber gang, dispells an ancient evil possessing an elvish shrine, and is accepted for training at an academy for knights. Clearly, a high destiny awaits her.

Loved this book and have approved of all the books in the series. I do not like the narrator at all. She does not change how she describes mundane issues with how she describes fights and battles. It is very hard to get excited about the book the first time through. Definitely would not use this narrator again. Will not seek out books read by her.
Paks sets out on an adventure and there is plenty in this book. This is completely different than the first book. My only complaint is the narrators choice for the elves. This is silly on my part, but they sound like the aliens in the "Galaxy Quest" movie and it grates on my nerves.
Wonderful story Paksenarrion courage and natural ability to just understand what needs to be done in the face of danger. I would love just a tiny pinch of that.
The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie they seem to have the same personalities the only difference is that our hero had a family and he is haunted by them but then he starts a new life with a lot of adventure. I would to read the las book though...........AUDIO WHERE IS IT!!!!
No I have not listened to any other of her book but I will make sure to look for it.
No I would not make a film they are always messed up and I can not beleave that any book writer would allow people to change anything just to make money. Look at Christopher Paolini's wonderful story they messed up his wonderful book with that so called movie and cut out the real story nothing made sense.
Read this book about 20 years ago and I loved it that and am happy to say I still love it today
liked it much better than the first book, hated how it ended, not sure way authors do that, but such is life and of course onto the next book!!!
so not boring.
For the most Jennifer's perfomance is easy to listen to. there are some parts that get to fast but... oh well the sound of her voice is wonderful. I like it.
Yes, wanted to just sit here and listen, but had to things to do. But it is easy to pick it back up and go on with the story line.
I'm a bibliophile since early childhood. Love speculative fiction, odd premises, mystery novels that teach about different places and times.
I understand that the author committed trilogy, and therefore the very disappointing ending can be somewhat ignored. This skirted so closely to asking some real questions about heroism, strength of character and values vs religion. I wish it had gone for it.
That being said it's a good adventure well told. and I think I need to read the sequel even though I'm much annoyed with the end.
I have read the story before and enjoyed it again the second time around, years later.
Van Dyck is a good narrator. Not great, but good. Nobody can compare to George Guidall and obviously this story needs a female narrator so the comparison is unjust. Just a bit over the top as far as theatricality at first, but perfectly fine after getting used to her style.
There are times when I find much of the SF/Fantasy genre writers spend too much time outfitting their heros with superpowers and fabulous items that make them almost unassailable. Paksenarrion is not such a character, and Elizabeth Moon is not such a writer. Nuance and subtlety, wrong-headedness and petty disputes, those all-too-human traits, abound in this series, right along with the grand struggle against evil. I would highly recommend buying this and the third book together. You'll want to dive right into the next one when you finish this!
Perfect narration once again by Jennifer Van Dyck
"Unbearable narrator, fun book."
I'd try another book written by Elizabeth Moon. But I hope that I'll never have to listen to Jennifer Van Dyck again. She does not understand what is happening in the book and speaks ridiculous voices. I found it very hard to listen to.
